Tafsir of Surah al-Isra: Ayah 9-11

The Purpose of the Quran

Goals of the Quran

Everything has a purpose and goal. Deeds of Allah, Exalted is He, aim at achieving specific goals, and realizing benefits. Allah invites people to do what brings them good, and prevents them from what brings them harm.
The Quran and the messages of the prophets of Allah are revealed to achieve great and noble goals for all humanity in general, and the Muslims in particular. The general and specific goals of the Quran are guiding people to the right path, giving good news to the obedient, warning of disobedience, and informing the disobedient of the torment prepared for them in the hereafter.

(Indeed, this Quran guides to the best way, and gives good news to the believers, who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward.

And for those who do not believe in the Hereafter, We have prepared painful torment.

Man prays for evil, as he prays for good. Man is ever hasty.)

[Q17:9-11]

Relationship with the Previous Part

You should know that Allah mentioned how He treated His sincere slaves. Allah caused His Messengerﷺ to make the Night Journey to al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, and granted Moses the Torah. Allah also informed about how He dealt with the disobedient and wrongdoers.  He punished them with different afflictions. These things point out to the fact that obeying Allah leads to all good and honor, and disobeying Him leads to all afflictions and loss. Then after that, Allah praises the Quran.

Tafsir

(Indeed, this Quran guides to the best way, and gives good news to the believers, who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward.)[9]

O Muhammad! Indeed, this noble Quran that Allah revealed to you guides people to the right path in all their affairs, worldly and religious, which is following the religion of Islam. Whoever follows this guidance will attain happiness, and whoever does not follow it will lose.

(Indeed, this Quran guides to the best way,)

The author of Fî Zilãl al-Quran wrote:
‘It is an absolute statement, regarding the guided ones, and to what they are guided. This guidance includes people and generations that are not restricted by time or place. It also includes every method and path Allah guides them to follow, and every good to which people are guided to in all times and places.
The Quran guides to the best way in tangible and intangible worlds by means of the clear and simple creed, not having any complication nor ambiguity. This creed frees man’s soul from burden of myth and superstition. It releases constructive human energy so it works and constructs, harmoniously and compatibly connecting rules governing nature and human natural disposition.
The Quran guides to the best way by harmonizing between man’s outward and inward existence; feelings and behavior; creed and action. They are all linked to the strong unbreakable bond, i.e. there is no god worthy of worship but Allah, Exalted is He. While doing so, man looks closely to the waiting reward in heaven though he is still on earth. Thus, man’s actions become worship if he does them sincerely for the sake of Allah even such actions are done for enjoying and rejoicing in life.
The Quran guides to the best way in the world of worship by balancing between obligations and man’s ability. Thus, obligations are neither difficult so the soul is bored and becomes unable to fulfill them, nor they are easy so the soul becomes lenient and negligent, nor they exceed the limits of reasonableness, rationality, and bearability.
The Quran guides to the best regarding relationships of people with each other, individuals, couples, governments, nations, states, and races. It establishes these relationships on firm and strong foundations that are influenced by neither opinions, whims, love nor hatred, nor changed by interests and goals. The Omniscient, Allah, who knows everything about His creation, has established these foundations. He knows what is good for them in every place and every generation, so He guides them to the best way regarding the system of government, finance, society, and international relationship, befitting human beings.
The Quran guides to the best way regarding adopting all divine religions and connecting between them, revering their sacredness, and preserving their inviolability. Thus, all humanity enjoys peace and harmony.’

(... and gives good news to the believers, who do righteous deeds, that they will have a great reward.)[9]

Moreover, the Quran gives good news to the believers, who do righteous deeds, that they will attain a great reward from their Creator, Allah. No one knows how much will be this reward except Allah, the Generous.
Then the ayat mention the evil end of those who refuse to follow the guidance of the Quran.

(And for those who do not believe in the Hereafter, We have prepared painful torment.)[10]

Those, who do not believe in the Hereafter, and do not acknowledge the existence of reward and punishment therein, such people do not refrain from sinning. Allah has prepared for them painful torment in Hellfire on the Day of Judgment.

(Man prays for evil, as he prays for good. Man is ever hasty.)[11]

When angry and bored, man prays for evil against himself or other people, such as saying: ‘O Allah! Destroy me, or Destroy so-and-so.’
He does so in the same manner as he prays for good things, such as saying,
‘O Allah! Forgive me, my parents, and the believers.’
Ibn Kathîr said, ‘Allah, Exalted is He, speaks about the hasty nature of man, and how he sometimes prays for evil against himself, his children, or wealth. He prays for death, annihilation, destruction, cursing, etc. If Allah accepted his prayer, he would perish because of his prayer.’

The Messengerﷺ said, “Do not pray for evil against yourselves, do not pray for evil against your children, do not pray for evil against your servants, and do not pray for evil against your wealth. It may coincide with a time when Allah, Exalted is He, grants from His bounty and thus, He may accept your prayer.”

(Man is ever hasty.)

The cause of man’s praying for evil just as he prays for good is that he is ever hasty in asking for whatever comes to his mind, and he does not think carefully.

Learned Lessons

The Quran, which Allah, Exalted is He, revealed to His Messenger Muhammadﷺ is guidance for all humanity. It guides to the right path, which is worshipping Allah alone, and obeying His commands.
The Quran gives good news to the believers, who perform righteous deeds, that they will attain good reward, i.e. Paradise, and it warns those, who disbelieve in Allah, that they will be punished with painful torment in Hellfire in the Hereafter.
Man by nature is hasty. Thus, he prays for evil things just as he prays for good things. If Allah accepted his prayer, he would perish.
