The Noble Quran: English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Mujādilah Ayat (20–22)

English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Mujādilah

Victory Will Be for the Believers

“Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger—they are among the lowest.” [Q 58:20]

“Allah has decreed: 'I shall surely prevail, I and My Messengers.” Indeed, Allah is All-Powerful, All-Mighty.” [Q 58:21]

“You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they are their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their clan. Such are the ones in whose hearts Allah has established faith, and He has strengthened them with a spirit from Himself. He will admit them into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. Those are the party of Allah. Truly, the party of Allah shall be the successful.” [Q58:22]

Relationship with the Preceding Section

The preceding section refers to the wickedness of the hypocrites and states that they will suffer severe punishment on the Day of Judgment. This part explains that the hypocrites deserve such painful torment because they oppose Allah and His Messenger Muhammad. It also affirms that Allah—Exalted be He—has decreed that He will grant victory to His Messengers over their enemies. Furthermore, it emphasizes that belief in the Oneness of Allah and love for the enemies of Islam can never coexist in the heart of a true believer. This is because one who truly loves someone cannot also love the enemy of that beloved.

“Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger—they are among the lowest.” [Q 58:20]

Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger Muhammad and fight against Islam will be among the lowest. This is because victory will inevitably belong to Messenger Muhammad and his followers, even if its realization is delayed.

“Allah has decreed: 'I shall surely prevail, I and My Messengers.” Indeed, Allah is All-Powerful, All-Mighty.” [Q 58:21]

In this ayah, Allah—Exalted be He—gives glad tidings to the believers. He has decreed in the Preserved Tablet that He and His Messengers will ultimately prevail over their enemies. However, this victory will occur at the appointed time determined by His wisdom.

Allah granted victory to His Messengers and the believers in the past—such as Noah, Salih, Moses, and Muhammad (peace be upon them)—and He will continue to grant victory to the believers in the future by His will and bounty.

Indeed, Allah is All-Powerful, All-Mighty.

Indeed, Allah is All-Powerful, All-Mighty. He is fully capable of defeating all who oppose Him and His Messenger Muhammad, and no one can prevail over Him—Exalted be He.

This ayah describes the qualities of the true believers.

O noble Messenger Muhammad, you will not find any people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, regardless of who they may be.

The intended meaning is a strong exhortation and emphasis on refraining from loving the enemies of Islam.

Even if they are their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their clan.

True believers do not love or befriend the enemies of Islam, even if those enemies are their fathers, who gave them life; their sons, who are extensions of themselves; their brothers, with whom they share blood relations; or their clan, to whom they belong by lineage and social connection.

The ayah mentions the fathers first, as they are typically those whom one is most obligated to obey. It then mentions the sons, who are often the most beloved. Next come the brothers, who are traditionally considered one's close supporters, and finally the clan, which represents one’s broader community and greatest worldly support after immediate family.

Ibn ʿAbbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“[You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger…] This ayah was revealed regarding AbuʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarraḥ, who killed his father at the Battle of Uhud; ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭab, who killed his uncle al-ʿAṣ ibn Hisham at the Battle of Badr; and Abu Bakr, who called his son to a duel at the Battle of Badr. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to him, ‘We want you to remain alive.’ It was also revealed about Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr, who killed his brother ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr, and about ʿAli ibn Abī Ṭalib and ʿUbaydah, who killed ʿUtbah, Shaybah, and al-Walid ibn ʿUtbah at the Battle of Badr. Allah, Exalted be He, praises these noble companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for not preferring familial ties over loyalty to Allah and His religion. ”

Such are the ones in whose hearts Allah has established faith, and He has strengthened them with a spirit from Himself.

Those who do not love those who oppose Allah and His Messenger are the ones in whose hearts Allah has firmly rooted true faith. Their hearts love only those who love the religion of Allah and reject those who oppose it. Allah has further strengthened their hearts with a spirit from Himself, enabling them to be firm against the enemies of Islam and compassionate toward the believers.

He will admit them into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him.

By His grace, Allah will admit these true believers—who never love those who oppose Him and His Messenger—into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will dwell eternally, enjoying lasting felicity. Allah is pleased with them for their sincerity and righteous deeds, and they are pleased with Him because of His immense reward and mercy.

Those are the party of Allah. Truly, the party of Allah shall be the successful.

Those who do not love those who oppose Allah and His Messenger are the true party of Allah. Surely, the party of Allah are the ones who will attain ultimate success in this life and the Hereafter.

Key Lessons from Surah al-Mujādilah, Ayat 20–22

Those who oppose Allah and His Messenger Muhammad shall be among the lowest and most humiliated.

Allah—Exalted be He—has decreed and recorded in the Preserved Tablet that He and His Messengers shall prevail over their enemies.

True belief in the Oneness of Allah and love for the enemies of Allah and His Messenger cannot coexist in a single heart. Those who love Allah and His Messenger do not love their enemies.

Allah—Exalted be He—has firmly established faith in the hearts of true believers who do not love the enemies of Allah and His Messenger. He strengthens them with a spirit from Himself.

These true believers will be admitted into Gardens beneath which rivers flow on the Day of Judgment. Allah will be pleased with them, and they will be pleased with Him.

The Noble Quran: English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Mujadilah Ayah (14-19) The Conditions of Hypocrites

The only thing worse than a liar is a liar that's also a hypocrite

English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Mujadilah

 Ayah (14-19)

“Have you not seen those who befriend a people against whom Allah is wrathful? They neither belong to you nor to them, and they swear falsely while they know.” [Q58:14]

“Allah has prepared for them a severe punishment. Evil indeed is what they used to do.” [Q58:15]

“They have taken their oaths as a shield; thus, they turn others away from the path of Allah. For them is a disgracing torment.” [Q58:16]

“Neither their wealth nor their children shall avail them anything against Allah. They are the inhabitants of the Fire; therein they shall abide.” [Q58:17]

“On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all, they shall swear to Him as they swear to you, thinking that they are upon something. Indeed, they are the liars.”58:18]

“Satan has taken control of them and caused them to forget the remembrance of Allah. They are the party of Satan. Verily, the party of Satan shall be the losers.” [Q58:19]

Relationship with the Preceding Part

In the preceding section, the believers were commanded to offer charity before engaging in private consultation with the Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him). However, this command was burdensome for some of the companions. Subsequently, Allah forgave them and permitted private consultation with the Messenger without the requirement of charity.

This section then addresses the condition of certain hypocrites who befriended the Jews and disclosed the secrets of the believers to them. These hypocrites belonged neither to the believers nor to the Jews; rather, they fluctuated between both sides, as described in the following ayah:

“Wavering all the time—not with these nor with those. And whomever Allah leads astray, you shall never find for him a way.” [Q4:143]

Tafsir

“Have you not seen those who befriend a people against whom Allah is wrathful? They neither belong to you nor to them, and they swear falsely while they know.” [Q 58:14]

The interrogative form in this ayah expresses amazement at the condition of the hypocrites, who have taken the Jews as allies and conveyed to them the news of the believers.

The people against whom Allah is wrathful are the Jews.

This ayah eloquently portrays the state of the hypocrites who secretly befriend the Jews. They used to relay the secrets of the Muslims to them—an astonishing behavior, as they neither belong to the Jews nor to the Muslims. Therefore, Allah—Exalted be He—is wrathful against them.

Qatadah, may Allah have mercy on him, said regarding this ayah: “Have you seen those who befriend a people against whom Allah is wrathful?”—they are the hypocrites who take the Jews as allies.”

They neither belong to you nor to them, and they swear falsely while they know.

By allying themselves with the Jews, the hypocrites have excluded themselves from the believers, yet they do not truly belong to the Jews either. In reality, the hypocrites possess neither a consistent creed nor a defined ideology.

The hypocrites not only convey the secrets of the believers to the Jews, but also habitually swear falsely—despite knowing they are lying.

“Have you not seen those who befriend a people against whom Allah is wrathful? They neither belong to you nor to them, and they swear falsely while they know.” [Q58:14]

It is reported that the following narration relates to the cause of the revelation of this ayah:

Abdul Allah Bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said: “The Messenger Muhammad said, ‘A man will come to you who looks with Satan’s eye, or Satan’s eyes.’ Then a man with blue skin came. The Messenger said to him, ‘Why do you insult me?’ The man continued to swear, claiming that he had not insulted the Messenger. Then Allah, Exalted be He, revealed: ‘And they swear falsely while they know.’”

“Allah has prepared for them a severe punishment. Evil indeed is what they used to do.” [Q58:15]

Allah, Exalted be He, has prepared for the hypocrites—those who befriend the Jews and swear falsely—a severe punishment in the Hereafter. Indeed, they committed evil deeds in worldly life by deceiving the Muslims and allying themselves with the Jews.

“They have taken their oaths as a shield; thus, they turn others away from the path of Allah. For them is a disgracing torment.” [Q58:16]

This ayah highlights another reprehensible characteristic of the hypocrites.

The hypocrites used their false oaths—swearing to the Muslims that they were among them—as a means of protection from punishment. In doing so, they deceived those unaware of their true intentions and led them away from the path of Allah and His religion, Islam. Their punishment will be severe; for them is a humiliating torment that Allah has prepared.

“Neither their wealth nor their children shall avail them anything against Allah. They are the inhabitants of the Fire; therein they shall abide.” [Q58:17]

This ayah refutes the claims of the hypocrites, who asserted that they would not be punished because they were wealthier than the Muslims and had more children.

Their wealth and children will be of no benefit to them against Allah’s punishment on the Day of Judgment. They will be the inhabitants of Hell, in which they will remain, suffering its severe torment.

Muqatil said: “The hypocrites say, ‘Muhammad claims that he can help people on the Day of Judgment. By Allah, we shall help ourselves with our children and wealth on the Day of Judgment.”

“On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all, they shall swear to Him as they swear to you, thinking that they are upon something. Indeed, they are the liars.”58:18]

This ayah describes the condition of the hypocrites on the Day of Judgment. It states that they will attempt to use false oaths to shield themselves against Allah’s punishment, just as they did in worldly life.

On that Day, Allah—Exalted be He—will raise the hypocrites for reckoning and recompense for their deeds. They will falsely swear to Allah, affirming that they were Muslims, just as they used to do in this life to avoid His severe punishment.

Due to their ignorance and lack of insight, they believe that such false oaths will benefit them and protect them from the punishment of Allah. Indeed, they are liars—those who have reached the highest level of falsehood.

In other words, the hypocrites used to make false oaths in worldly life to deceive the Muslims into believing that they were true believers. They did so to protect themselves from any consequences that might befall them. Their delusion reaches such an extent that they believe they can deceive Allah—Exalted be He—on the Day of Judgment with the same false oaths to avoid His punishment.

It is not surprising that the hypocrites swore falsely to the Muslims, as human beings cannot know what lies within the hearts. In this way, the hypocrites managed to protect themselves and secure worldly benefits. What is astonishing, however, is that they will repeat this behavior before Allah, Who knows both the hidden and the manifest, even though such oaths will be of no benefit to them against His punishment.

Qatadah, may Allah have mercy on him, said regarding the ayah: “Then they shall swear to Him, as they swear to you, and think they are upon something. Indeed, they are the liars!”—the hypocrite will falsely swear to Allah on the Day of Judgment just as he used to swear to his companions in worldly life.”

“Satan has taken control of them and caused them to forget the remembrance of Allah. They are the party of Satan. Verily, the party of Satan shall be the losers.” [Q58:19]

This ayah identifies the underlying reason that led the hypocrites to persist in their wickedness and hypocrisy.

Satan gained control over them, prompting them to follow his incitement and provocation. They came under his influence and became obedient to his commands. As a result, they forgot the remembrance of Allah and that He will hold them accountable for all their deeds on the Day of Judgment. Consequently, they lived their lives neglecting what would bring them happiness in the Hereafter and instead pursued that which would lead to their ultimate loss and ruin.

Verily, the party of Satan shall be the losers.

Those who possess such attributes are the party of Satan—his followers and soldiers. Indeed, the party of Satan shall be the losers, for they preferred the fleeting life of this world over the enduring life of the Hereafter.

Key Lessons from Surah Al-Mujadilah, Ayat (14–19)

Islam prohibits forming friendly relationships with the enemies of Islam or disclosing to them the secrets of the Muslims.

The hypocrites belong neither to the Jews nor to the Muslims; rather, they waver between the two groups.

Severe punishment awaits the hypocrites on the Day of Judgment due to their wickedness and evil deeds.

The hypocrites use false oaths as a means of protection from punishment. However, they will suffer humiliation and disgrace because of their despicable actions.

Neither wealth nor children will avail the hypocrites on the Day of Judgment.

The hypocrites believe that false oaths will benefit them on the Day of Judgment, just as they did in worldly life. However, they are mistaken; such oaths will not protect them from Allah’s punishment.

Satan has gained control over the hypocrites and caused them to forget the remembrance of Allah, which will lead to their loss in the Hereafter.

The Noble Quran English Translation and Tafsir Surah Al-Mujadilah

English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Mujadilah Ayah 12-13
Etiquette for Making Secret Counsel with Messenger Muhammad

58:12 O you who believe, when you want to make a secret counsel with the Messenger, then offer charity before your counsel. That is better for you and purer. But if you do not find means, then surely Allah is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

58:13 Are you afraid of giving charity before your secret counsel? If you do not do so, and Allah has forgiven you, then perform the prayer, give the zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah is aware of what you do.

Relationship with the Previous Part

The previous part mentions the conditions of the Jews and the hypocrites concerning making evil secret counsel against Messenger Muhammad and the believers. It also mentions the proper manner that should be followed when making secret counsel. Then, this part mentions etiquette for making secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad. It says that the believers should offer charity before making secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad. That is because the believers used to compete with one another to speak to him and listen to his conversation. Their love for Messenger Muhammad motivated them to make frequent secret counsel with him, which caused him inconvenience. Therefore, Allah, Exalted be He, commanded the believers to offer charity before making secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad as an act of reverence to Messenger Muhammad and to help the poor by such charity.

Tafsir

58:12 O you who believe, when you want to make a secret counsel with the Messenger, then offer charity before your counsel. That is better for you and purer. But if you do not find means, then surely Allah is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

Qatada, may Allah have mercy on him, said, ‘The people used to make secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad frequently until it caused him difficulty. Thus, Allah made an end to such behavior. [58:12 O you who believe, when you want to make a secret counsel with the Messenger, then offer charity before your counsel.] Thus, any person, who wanted something from Messenger Muhammad, would not fulfil his need unless he offered charity before making secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad; however, this was hard for the believers. Therefore, Allah, Exalted be, revealed, [But if you do not find means, then surely Allah is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.]

58:12 O you who believe, when you want to make a secret counsel with the Messenger, then offer charity before your counsel.

O you who believe, when you want to make a secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad about any matter that concerns you, then you should offer charity before your counsel as an act of reverence for Messenger Muhammad and a means of helping the needy.

Some scholars believe that commanding to offer charity before making secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad has many advantages, among which the following: 1) Making things easy for Messenger Muhammad by decreasing secret counsels with him so that he could devote himself to the great responsibilities that Allah commanded him to carry out. 2) Alleviating the worries of the poor, who may be unhappy when the wealthy can make secret counsels with Messenger Muhammad. When the poor know that the wealthy should give charity before making secret counsels with Messenger Muhammad, they would not be bored. 3) Not distracting Messenger Muhammad with trivial matters and enabling him to dedicate himself to conveying Islam. 4) Distinguishing those who love the life of this world from those who love the Hereafter, as giving wealth without taking anything in return for it is a test revealing what is in the inner souls.

That is better for you and purer. But if you do not find means, then surely Allah is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

The ayah mentions why the believers should offer charity before making a secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad.

O you who believe, offering charity before making a secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad is better for you, as it is an act of obedience to Allah, Exalted be He. In addition, it is a means for purifying your souls from stinginess and love of wealth, helping the poor, and strengthening unity among the members of the Muslim community. However, if one of you cannot find the means for offering charity, then he should not be sad, as Allah is All-Forgiving and All-Merciful. Allah forgives the sins of those who ask His forgiveness and bestows His mercy on whomever He wants. Allah is All-Merciful, and He will not punish you if you make secret counsels with Messenger Muhammad without giving charity.

58:13 Are you afraid of giving charity before your secret counsel? If you do not do so, and Allah has forgiven you, then perform the prayer, give the zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah is aware of what you do.

O you who believe, are you afraid of giving charity before making a secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad lest you should become poor?

If you do not do so, and Allah has forgiven you, then perform the prayer, give the zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah is aware of what you do.

O you who believe, if you do not offer charity before making a secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad, and Allah has forgiven you for not doing so by allowing you to make a secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad without giving charity, then you must perform the obligations that Allah has commanded you to do. You must perform the prayer, give the zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger by complying with their commands and avoiding their prohibitions. Allah, Exalted be He, is aware of what you do. Allah fully knows all your deeds and statements, and He will recompense you according to your deeds.

It should be noted that ayah [13] does not mention explicitly that the companions of Messenger Muhammad failed to comply with the command to offer charity before making a secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad. They might not offer charity because they did not make a secret counsel. Moreover, [If you do not do so, and Allah has forgiven you…] does not denote that they did not comply with the command. That is because the meaning of the ayah is that Allah has forgiven them by abrogating the command to give charity to make the matter easier for them. And Allah knows best.

The Learned Lessons from Surah Al-Mujadilah Ayah 12-13

The believers were commanded to offer charity before making a secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad, but it was hard for them to do so. Then, Allah, out of His generosity and mercy, forgave them, and they were allowed to make a secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad without giving charity. It appears from the context of the ayah that the rule to give charity before making a secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad was abrogated after the companions of Messenger Muhammad carried it out, but it was hard for some of them; therefore, it was abrogated.

The rule of giving charity before making a secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad was abrogated, and the companions of Messenger Muhammad were commanded to perform the prayer, give the zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger.

English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Mujadilah: Etiquette of Assembly in Islam

The Noble Quran Surah Al-Mujadilah Etiquette of Assembly in Islam

English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Mujadilah

 Ayah 11
Etiquette of Assembly in Islam

58:11 O you who believe, when it is said to you make room in the assemblies, then make room and Allah will make room for you: and when it is said, ‘Rise, then rise.’ Allah will raise in ranks those who believe among you and have been given knowledge. And Allah is aware of what you do.

Relationship with the Previous Part

The believers are prohibited from making secret counsel when they are present in the assembly in order not to sadden those who are with them in the assembly. Then, Allah, Exalted be He, commands the believers to make room for others in the assembly, which will bring harmony and amicability among them in this part.

Tafsir

58:11 O you who believe, when it is said to you make room in the assemblies, then make room and Allah will make room for you: and when it is said, ‘Rise, then rise.’ Allah will raise in ranks those who believe among you and have been given knowledge. And Allah is aware of what you do.

O you who believe, when it is said to you make room in the assemblies to provide your brothers in Islam with sufficient space to sit, you should obey and do as you are asked to do. That is because when you make room for your brothers in Islam, Allah, Exalted be He, will, out of His mercy and bounty, make room for you in all things you love and desire.

Qatada, may Allah be pleased with him, said, ‘People used to compete with one another to sit in the assembly of Messenger Muhammad. Therefore, Allah revealed, [58:11 O you who believe, when it is said to you make room in the assemblies, then make room and Allah will make room for you: and when it is said…]

Commanding to make room for others in the assemblies in the ayah is general for any assembly that Muslims may gather for a praiseworthy reason, whether an assembly of learning, a festival, and so on. It should be noted that everyone is entitled to the place that he first occupies. However, it is a good manner to make room for his brothers in Islam.

In addition, the ayah indicates that whoever makes room for others Allah will make room for him in all good matters, whether related to the life of this world or the Hereafter.

It is worth mentioning that such an etiquette will have a great impact on instilling respect and love in the hearts.

And when it is said, ‘Rise, then rise.’

O you who believe, when it is said to you, ‘Rise and leave your places to let other distinguished people, such as scholars, sit in your place, then you should rise and let them sit in your places.

Allah will raise in ranks those who believe among you and have been given knowledge. And Allah is aware of what you do.

Allah, out of His generosity and bounty, will raise the ranks of those who believe in His Oneness and those who have been knowledge among you in the life of this world and the Hereafter. Allah is aware of what you do. Allah fully knows who deserves to be raised to a high rank and who does not deserve it.

Abdul Allah Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, said, ‘[and when it is said, ‘Rise, then rise.’] If it is said to you, ‘Rise, then you should rise to perform righteous deeds and the prayer.’

Mujahid, may Allah have mercy on him, said, ‘[and when it is said, ‘Rise, then rise.’] Rise to perform any good act, whether fighting the enemies of Islam, enjoining the good, or supporting the truth.’

The Learned Lessons from Surah Al-Mujadilah Ayah 11

Making room for one’s brother in Islam is a commendable practice that one should follow because it brings about love and sympathy among Muslims.

Making room for one’s brother in Islam should be done in any assembly that Muslims gather, whether it is in the mosques, an assembly for seeking knowledge, etc.

If one sits in a place in a mosque, it is impressible to ask him to forsake his place for another person. Rather, Muslims should make room for one another in the mosques.

Those who make room for their brothers in Islam in the assemblies will be recompensed immensely.

Allah, out of His mercy and generosity, will raise the ranks of the believers and those who have been given knowledge.

English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Mujadilah : Punishment of Those Who Make Evil Consultation

Quran English Translation Tafsir Surah Al-Mujadilah

English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Mujadilah
Ayah 8-10
Punishment of Those Who Make Evil Consultation

58:8 Have you not seen those who were forbidden from secret consultation, then they return to what they were forbidden? And they counsel secretly for sinning, hostility, and disobedience of the Messenger. And when they come to you, they greet you with what Allah has not greeted you. And they say within themselves, ‘Why does not Allah punish us for what we say?’ Sufficient for them is Hell wherein they shall be burnt. How an evil end it is!

58:9 O you who believe, when you counsel secretly one another, counsel not for sinning, hostility, and disobedience of the Messenger, and counsel one another for piety and fear of Allah. And fear Allah to whom you shall be gathered.

58:10 Secret counsel is only from Satan that he may cause grief to the believers, and he will not harm them in the least except by the leave of Allah. And in Allah, let the believers put their trust.

Relationship with the Previous Part

The previous part mentions that Allah knows all things and nothing is hidden from His perfect knowledge. Then, this part refers to those who were prohibited from making secret consultations, namely, the Jews and the hypocrites. It mentions that they return to doing what they were prohibited to do. In addition, they used to greet Messenger Muhammad with evil greetings.

Tafsir

58:8 Have you not seen those who were forbidden from secret consultation, then they return to what they were forbidden? And they counsel secretly for sinning, hostility, and disobedience of the Messenger. And when they come to you, they greet you with what Allah has not greeted you. And they say within themselves, ‘Why does not Allah punish us for what we say?’ Sufficient for them is Hell wherein they shall be burnt. How an evil end it is!

The condition of some people is strange. They favor misguidance over guidance; they are advised, but they ignore the advice; they are warned of committing wrongdoing, but they insist on committing it.

58:8 Have you not seen those who were forbidden from secret consultation, then they return to what they were forbidden? And they counsel secretly for sinning, hostility, and disobedience of the Messenger.

O noble Messenger Muhammad, ‘If you want to be astonished, you should be astonished by the condition of the Jews and the hypocrites. They are prohibited from secret consultation that causes worry and irritation to the believers, but they ignore the command. They have returned to what they were forbidden and continued making evil secret consultation against the Messenger of Allah and the believers.’

Imam Ibn Kathir, may Allah have mercy on him, wrote, ‘Mujahid said, ‘There was a treaty between Messenger Muhammad [peace be upon him] and the Jews. They used to make secret consultations whenever a companion of Messenger Muhammad would pass by them, which would make the believer think that they were talking about killing or something that he disliked. Thus, the believers would fear them and leave the road where the Jews were sitting. Therefore, Messenger Muhammad forbade the Jews from making such a secret consultation, but they returned to making it. Thus, this ayah was revealed: [58:8 Have you not seen those who were forbidden from secret consultation, then they return to what they were forbidden? And they counsel secretly for sinning, hostility, and disobedience of the Messenger.]

The ayah mentions that the Jews and the hypocrites returned to making secret consultations even after they were forbidden from doing it. Their conduct reveals that advice does not affect them. They only hear the advice, they act as if nothing happened, and do what they were forbidden to do.

The secret consultation of the Jews and the hypocrites was about hostility against Messenger Muhammad and the believers, as well as sinning. This shows that their secret consultation includes all types of evil and wickedness. They make secret consultations by talking about evil plans and words, uttering unjust and hostile statements against the believers, and doing acts that are disobedience to Messenger Muhammad.

The Jews and the hypocrites did not only make secret consultations though they were prohibited from doing it, but also spoke evil words to Messenger Muhammad [peace be upon him], which indicates their wicked intention.

And when they come to you, they greet you with what Allah has not greeted you.

O noble Messenger Muhammad, when the Jews and the hypocrites come to you and greet you, they greet you with a greeting that Allah has not greeted you with and has not approved.

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said, ‘Some Jews came to Messenger Muhammad, and said, ‘As-sam be upon you, abu al-Qasim (may death be upon you).’ Therefore, I said, ‘As-sam on you, and may Allah punish you and punish you.’ Thereupon, Messenger Muhammad said, ‘O Aisha, ‘Verily, Allah does not like wicked speech.’ Aisha said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, do you not see what they say?’ Messenger Muhammad said, ‘Do you not see that I reciprocated against them what they said to me? I replied by saying, ‘And to you too.’’ Thus, the following ayah was revealed about this matter. [ And when they come to you, they greet you with what Allah has not greeted you. And they say within themselves, ‘Why does not Allah punish us for what we say?’]

And they say within themselves, ‘Why does not Allah punish us for what we say?’

O noble Messenger Muhammad, when the Jews and the hypocrites greet you with a greeting that Allah does not approve, they say within themselves, ‘Why does not Allah punish us for what we say if Muhammad was truly His Prophet and Messenger? In other words, they deny the prophet-hood of Messenger Muhammad as they believe that Allah will punish them for their wickedness and evil greeting if he is truly His Messenger.

Allah, Exalted be He, refutes their evil thought and assured the heart of His beloved Messenger Muhammad.

Sufficient for them is Hell wherein they shall be burnt. How an evil end it is!

O noble Messenger Muhammad, do not be sad because of the mannerless behavior of the Jews and the hypocrites with you and your companions. Sufficient for them is Hell with its severe punishment. They will burn therein forever. How an evil end Hell is if they know!

58:9 O you who believe, when you counsel secretly one another, counsel not for sinning, hostility, and disobedience of the Messenger, and counsel one another for piety and fear of Allah. And fear Allah to whom you shall be gathered.

The ayah addresses the believers and instructs them to comply with certain ethics that lead to attaining the pleasure of Allah and generating affinity among them.

O you who believe, when you counsel secretly one another, do not counsel for sinning, hostility, and disobedience of the Messenger. Do not act like the hypocrites, who make secret consultations about what displeases Allah and His Messenger. O who believe, your consultation should be about what pleases Allah and His Messenger, and piety, and fear of Allah.

And fear Allah to whom you shall be gathered.

O who believe, you should fear Allah in all your conditions as you shall be gathered and return to Allah on the Day of Judgment for reckoning and recompense for all your deeds.

58:10 Secret counsel is only from Satan that he may cause grief to the believers, and he will not harm them in the least except by the leave of Allah. And in Allah, let the believers put their trust.

Qatada, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated, ‘The hypocrites used to make secret consultation among them, which would sadden the believers. Therefore, Allah, Exalted be He, revealed the following Ayah, [58:10 Secret counsel is only from Satan that he may cause grief to the believers…].’

Secret consultation done by the hypocrites for sinning and hostility is only from Satan. He incites the hypocrites to make such a secret counsel to sadden the believers by making them think that the secret consultation of the hypocrites is against them. However, Satan or the secret consultation incited by Satan will not harm the believers in the least except by the leave of Allah.

And in Allah, let the believers put their trust.

The believers should not worry about the secret counsel of the hypocrites and the Jews. They should put their trust in Allah, Exalted be He. He will take care of them and protect them against whatever plot that their enemies may plan to harm them.

The Learned Lessons from Surah Al-Mujadilah Ayah 8-10

The enemies of Islam do their best to plan against Muslims and sadden them.

The Jews used to greet Prophet Muhammad by saying, ‘As-sam be upon you, namely, death be upon you.’ And Messenger Muhammad used to reply to their greeting by saying, ‘And to you too,’ which would reciprocate their evil greeting against them.

Allah, Exalted be He, has commanded the believers to make their secret counsel for commanding piety and fear of Allah, and He has prohibited them to make secret counsel for sinning and disobedience of Messenger Muhammad.

All people will be gathered to Allah for reckoning and recompense on the Day of Judgment.

Satan incites the enemies of Islam to make secret counsel to sadden the believers, but their secret consultation will not harm the believers in the least except by the leave of Allah.

The believers should put their trust in Allah and firmly believe that nothing will happen except by His will.

Islam prohibits making secret counsel between two people to the exclusion of the third one to prevent any negative thoughts that such counsel may cause.

Surah Al-Mujadilah Ayah 5-7 Warning Those Who Oppose Allah and His Messenger Muhammad

The Noble Quran Surah Al-Mujadilah English Translation and Tafsir

English Translation and Tafsir of Surah
 Al-Mujadilah Ayah 5-7
Warning Those Who Oppose Allah and His Messenger Muhammad

58:5 Verily, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger shall be disgraced as those before them were disgraced. And We have revealed clear signs. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating torment.

58:6 On the day when Allah shall raise them all, then He shall tell them what they did. Allah has recorded it while they have forgotten it. And Allah is a Witness over all things.

58:7 Have you not seen that Allah knows all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth? There is no secret consultation between three, but He is the fourth of them, nor five, but He is the sixth of them, nor fewer than that, nor more, but He is with them wherever they may be. Then, He shall tell them what they have done on the Day of Judgment. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing of all things.

Relationship with the Previous Part

The first part of surah Al-Mujadilah mentions rules on az-Zihar in Islam and criticizes those who make az-Zihar against their wives. It also praises the believers, who comply with the limits prescribed by Allah. Then, this part mentions the punishment of those who transgress the limits prescribed by Allah and opposes Allah and His Messenger. They will suffer humiliation in the life of this world and painful torment in the Hereafter. This matter is supported by the fact that Allah is fully aware of their deeds. He will inform them of their deeds on the Day of Judgment, and He will recompense them justly for their deeds, good or evil.

Tafsir

58:5 Verily, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger shall be disgraced as those before them were disgraced. And We have revealed clear signs. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating torment.

Verily, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger Muhammad, and disobey and disregard the law prescribed by Allah shall be humiliated and disgraced. They will suffer severe punishment, just as the former disbelievers were punished because they opposed Allah and His Messengers. This matter c true when the disbelievers were captured, humiliated, and killed on the day of the Battle of Badr and the Trench.

And We have revealed clear signs. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating torment.

Allah, Exalted be He, has revealed clear signs that no one disregards except the deniers and arrogant. For the disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah and His Messengers, and are haughty to follow the law He prescribed, is a humiliating torment. They will face grievous torment in the life of this world and the Hereafter.

58:6 On the day when Allah shall raise them all, then He shall tell them what they did. Allah has recorded it while they have forgotten it. And Allah is a Witness over all things.

The disbelievers will suffer humiliating punishment on the day He shall raise them all from their graves for reckoning on the Day of Judgment. Allah, Exalted be He, shall tell the disbelievers what they did in the worldly life as He has recorded it while they have forgotten it because they thought that they would not be asked about it. Allah will tell them all their wicked deeds that they did and call them to account for them.

And Allah is a Witness over all things.

Allah is a Witness over all things. He fully knows what they did, and nothing of their deeds is hidden from Him.

O noble Messenger Muhammad, have you not seen that Allah knows all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth? Nothing, no matter how small or big it may be, Allah knows it and manages its affairs. Thus, how can the deeds of the disbelievers be hidden from the One, Who is All-Knowing? Nothing of the disbelievers' wicked deeds is hidden from Allah, Exalted be He.

There is no secret consultation between three, but He is the fourth of them, nor five, but He is the sixth of them, nor fewer than that, nor more, but He is with them wherever they may be.

There is no secret consultation between three people, but Allah is with them by His knowledge. He hears their conversation and secret consultation. Moreover, there is no secret consultation between four, or five, or six people, or more or less than that, but Allah is with them by His perfect knowledge. He hears their talks and private discourse, and He is aware of them at any time and in wherever place that they are. Allah, Exalted be He, knows the secret and the public, and no public or secret affair is hidden from His comprehensive knowledge. Allah is Omniscient and His knowledge encompasses all things.

The ayah mentions consultation between three, four, or five people to give an example and depict the matter in real-life situations.

The intended meaning by Allah is with them in the ayah is that Allah, Exalted be He, is with those who make secret consultation by His perfect knowledge.

Then, He shall tell them what they have done on the Day of Judgment. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing of all things.

On the Day of Judgment, Allah will tell people and those who make secret consultation what they have done in worldly life to inform them that Allah is fully aware of their secret consultation. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing of all things, and nothing is hidden from Him, Exalted be He.

Informing those who make secret consultation of their behavior implies criticism and censure to those who follow in their footsteps.

The Learned Lessons from Surah Al-Mujadilah Ayah 5-7

Humiliation and disgrace in the life of this world and the Hereafter will be for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger Muhammad, which implies giving good news to the believers of being victorious and warning the disbelievers of severe punishment.

Allah, Exalted be He, will raise people from their graves for reckoning on the Day of Judgment. He will tell them all their deeds that they did in worldly life, small or big. Allah has recorded all their deeds in the records of deeds, though people have forgotten them, which will evidence against them.

Allah is Omniscient. He knows all things in the heavens and the earth. He knows any secret consultation that may take place between two, three, four, or more or less than that. Allah, by His perfect knowledge, is with them, and He will tell them on the Day of Judgment about their secret consultation.

Cause of Revelation of the First Ayat in Surah Al-Mujadilah

The Noble Quran Surah Al-Mujadilah Cause of Revelation

The Noble Quran

Cause of Revelation of the First Ayat in Surah Al-Mujadilah

58:1 Indeed, Allah has heard the words of her that disputes with you concerning her husband, and complains to Allah. And Allah hears your conservation. Truly, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

Abu Al-‘Aliyah reported that Khawla Bint Tha’labah came to Prophet Muhammad [peace be upon him] while Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, was washing his head. Khawla said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have been married to my husband for a long time, and I have given birth to many children from him, but he has made zihar against me, namely, he divorced her by saying, ‘You are like the back of my mother to me.’ Messenger Muhammad said, ‘You are prohibited to him.’ Thus, Khawla said, ‘I complain to Allah about my need.’ Then she said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, ‘I have been married to my husband for a long time, and I have given birth to many children from my husband.’ Then, Messenger Muhammad said, ‘You are prohibited to him.’ Whenever Messenger Muhammad said to her, ‘You are prohibited to him.’ she would cry out and say, ‘I complain to Allah about my need.’ Then, the divine revelation came to Messenger Muhammad while Aisha was still washing his head. Thus, she beckoned to Khawla to stop speaking. Aisha said, ‘Whenever the divine revelation would come to Messenger Muhammad, something that is similar to a slumber would overcome him.’ When the coming of the divine revelation stopped, Messenger Muhammad said to Khawla, ‘Call you husband.’ Then, Messenger Muhammad recited to him, [58:1 Indeed, Allah has heard the words of her that disputes with you concerning her husband, and complains to Allah. And Allah hears your conservation. Truly, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.] When Messenger Muhammad reached this ayah [58:3 And those of you who divorce their wives by Zihar, and they go back on what they have said, they shall set free a slave before they touch one another.] he said to the husband of Khawla, ‘Can you set free a slave?’ He said, ‘No, I cannot.’ Then, Messenger Muhammad recited, [58:4 And he who finds not the means, then he should fast two successive months before they touch one another.] The husband of Khawla said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I fear that if I do not eat three meals a day that I may become faint.’ Then, Messenger Muhammad recited, [And if he is unable to do so, he should feed sixty poor persons.] Messenger Muhammad said to him, ‘Can you feed sixty poor persons?’ The husband of Khawla said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I cannot feed sixty poor persons except if you help me to do so.’ Thus, Messenger Muhammad helped him and he fed sixty poor persons (Tafsir At-Tabari).

Sayyid Qutb, may Allah have mercy on him, wrote, ‘In this surah, as in almost all surahs of this part of the Quran, we shall live with some events that took place during the early stages of the Islamic society in Al-Madinah. These events contribute to molding, reforming, and preparing it to undertake its universal role, which Allah has appointed for it in the circle and preordainments of this universe. It is a huge role that begins with establishing a new, complete, and comprehensive conception of life in the souls of this nascent group. It aims to establish a realistic life based on this conception. Then, this nascent group shall convey it to the whole world to establish human life based on this conception for all humanity. And it is a huge role that necessitates complete preparation. Those Muslims, whom the preordainment prepared for this huge role, were ordinary people. Some of them were among the early emigrants from Makkah and the helpers among the inhabitants of Al-Madinah, whose faith became stronger, their understanding of the new creed became firm, and their souls became dedicated to this creed. They found out the real cause of their existence in this life and the reality of this large existence on earth. Their existence in the earth merged with the reality of the universe; thus, they became a means for realizing the preordainment of Allah in the universe. They neither deviated from their goal nor lagged in their march to it. Moreover, they found nothing in their hearts, but Allah as they are described in this surah, [58:22 You shall not find any people, who believe in Allah and the Last Day, love those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even though they be their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their clan. Those – Allah has established faith in their hearts and He has strengthened them with spirit from Himself. And He shall admit them into Gardens underneath which rivers flow; they shall abide therein. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. Those are the party of Allah. Lo! Surely, the party of Allah shall be the successful.] However, these first Muslims were a minority in comparison with the ever-increasing number of the Muslim community, especially after Islam became an intimidating power even before the victory that made Makkah under the authority of the Muslims. After this victory, people embraced Islam, but some of them did not have sufficient Islamic education and did not live enough time in an Islamic environment. Furthermore, some hypocrites, who favored their interests or safety with their sick hearts and opportunist souls, embraced Islam. They were wavering between the Muslim community and the strong powers among the opponents of Islam then, whether the disbelievers or the Jews. Educating and preparing these souls for their great role on the earth that was preordained for it needed strenuous efforts, endless patience, and slow treatment in small and serious matters alike. This undertaking was a massive formation movement that Islam and Messenger Muhammad undertook to build souls and establish the Muslim community and the Islamic state. It was based on the divine approach with the intention to understand and realize it and convey it to the farthest part of the earth in the form of a live image, not pages and words. In this surah and the whole of this part of the Quran, we shall see some of these huge efforts and part of the Quranic method when it comes to educating such souls and dealing with events, customs, and whims. We shall also see a part of the long conflict that took place between Islam and its enemies among the disbelievers, the Jews, and the hypocrites. We shall particularly see in this surah an inspiring image revealing the care of Allah for this nascent Muslim community while He was establishing it under His care, bringing it up by His method, and making it feel His care for it. Moreover, Allah was establishing His presence in its consciousness even in its most private affairs, its smallest matters, and its most hidden intentions. Allah, Exalted be He, put this fledgling community under His care and protection and encompassed it under His banner and shade. He took care to mold its ethics, customs, and traditions in such a manner that the community, which is under the care of Allah, belongs to Him, represents His party on the earth, and raises His banner on the earth to be recognized as His party, deserves. Therefore, this surah begins a wondrous image representing this unique period of human history when there was contact between heaven and the earth, which was a real, direct image, by sharing in the affairs of its daily life with an obvious involvement. [58:1 Indeed, Allah has heard the words of her that disputes with you concerning her husband, and complains to Allah. And Allah hears your conservation. Truly, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.] Thus, we see that divine care intervenes in the daily affairs of a small, poor, humble family to decide the rule of Allah in its case. Indeed, Allah, Exalted be He, listened to the woman while she was discussing with Messenger Muhammad her matter. Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, could hardly hear the discussion though she was near the woman, which is an image that fills the heart with the certainty of the existence of Allah, His closeness to us, His love and care (Fi Zilal Al-Quran).’

Surah Al-Mujadilah:The Rule on Az-Zihar

Quran Surah Al-Mujadilah English Translation and Tafsir

English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Mujadilah Ayah 1-4

58:1 Indeed, Allah has heard the words of her that disputes with you concerning her husband, and complains to Allah. And Allah hears your conservation. Truly, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

58:2 Those of you who divorce their wives by Zihar – they are not their mothers. Their mothers are only those who gave them birth. And indeed, they utter an ill word and a lie. And indeed, Allah is All-Pardoning, All-Forgiving.

58:3 And those of you who divorce their wives by Zihar, and they go back on what they have said, they shall set free a slave before they touch one another. By that, you are admonished, and Allah is All-aware of what you do.

58:4 And he who finds not the means, then he should fast two successive months before they touch one another. And if he is unable to do so, he should feed sixty poor persons. That is that you may believe in Allah and His Messenger. And these are the limits of Allah. And for the disbelievers is a painful torment.

Cause of Revelation of First Ayat in Surah Al-Mujadilah

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, could hardly hear the discussion though she was near the woman, which is an image that fills the heart with the certainty of the existence of Allah, His closeness to us, His love and care.’

Tafsir

58:1 Indeed, Allah has heard the words of her that disputes with you concerning her husband, and complains to Allah. And Allah hears your conservation. Truly, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

Indeed, Allah, Exalted be He, heard the words of the woman, Khawla, when she was complaining to Messenger Muhammad about the case of her husband, who made Zihar against her by saying, ‘You are like the back of my mother to me,’ which would make her unlawful to him like his mother. She was complaining about her grief and sorrow to Allah and Allah heard the conversation that took place between Messenger Muhammad and the woman for truly Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing. Allah, Exalted be He, hears all sounds and sees all things and nothing is hidden from Him.

It was reported that Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, passed with some people by a woman, who stopped for a long time and admonished him. She said, ‘O Umar, you used to be called Umeer when you were a child, and then you were called Umar. Then, you are called the Commander of the Believers. Thus, fear Allah, O Umar. Whoever is certain that he will die fears the passage of time; whoever is certain that reckoning on the Day of Judgment will take place fears the punishment.’ Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, kept listening to her. Then, it was said to him, ‘O Commander of the Believers, do you stop such a long time listening to this old woman? Umar said, ‘By Allah, if she would make me stop from the beginning of the day until it ends, I will keep listening to her save to perform an obligatory prayer. Do you know who this woman is? She is Khawla Bint Tha’labah. Allah has heard her speech while He is above seven heavens. Would Allah, the Lord of the worlds, hear speech, and Umar would not?’

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said, ‘Praise be to Allah Whose Hearing encompasses all sounds. The pleading woman, Khawla, came to Messenger Muhammad to complain to Messenger about her husband and I was beside her on one side of the house, but I could not hear what she was saying.’

Sayid Qutb, may Allah have mercy on him, wrote, ‘This is the case that a surah in the Quran begins with, the everlasting book of Allah, which every part of this universe is responsive to every word thereof while they are being revealed by Allah. This surah opens with such a statement, [58:1 Indeed, Allah has heard the words of her that disputes with you concerning her husband, and complains to Allah.] Thus, Allah is present while this personal matter of an ordinary woman among Muslims is taking place. Listening to it does not prevent Him, Exalted be He, from conducting the affairs of the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, nor does it prevent Him from deciding any matter of the matters of heavens, and the earth. Indeed, it is a serious matter that such an amazing event takes place, and that a community of people feel that Allah is with them. He, Exalted be He, is present while their affairs, great and small, happen, and that He cares about their daily problems, responsive to their ordinary crisis though He, Exalted be He, is High, Great, All-Powerful, and Almighty.’

Then, the following ayah mentions the rule on az-Zihar and the atonement required to make amends for it.

58:2 Those of you who divorce their wives by Zihar – they are not their mothers. Their mothers are only those who gave them birth. And indeed, they utter an ill word and a lie. And indeed, Allah is All-Pardoning, All-Forgiving.

Those who make their wives like their mothers by saying, ‘You are like the back of my mother to me,’ namely, their wives are like their mothers in terms of prohibition – their wives are not their mothers. Rather, their mothers are those who gave them birth. Such a statement is a lie that they utter. Their wives can never be like their mothers.

And indeed, they utter an ill word and a lie. And indeed, Allah is All-Pardoning, All-Forgiving.

Those who divorce their wives by resorting to Zihar utter an ill word and a lie that Islamic Shariah prohibits. And indeed, Allah is All-Pardoning, All-Forgiving. Allah has given them the means to atone for their wicked statement as He forgives the sins of those who repent of their sins and perform righteous deeds for His sake.

It is clear from the abovementioned Ayah that az-Zihar is an abominable practice as it likens the wife to her husband’s mother, which is a sheer lie. This confirms that the practice of az-Zihar is prohibited in Islamic Shariah. It is worth mentioning that az-Zihar was considered divorce during the time of pre-Islamic era which made the wife prohibited to her husband for good.

58:3 And those of you who divorce their wives by Zihar, and they go back on what they have said, they shall set free a slave before they touch one another. By that, you are admonished, and Allah is All-aware of what you do.

Those who make Zihar whereby their wives become prohibited for them, and then they want to revoke their oath, go back on what they have said, and have normal relationship with their wives, they must atone for their oath.

They must set free a slave before having sexual intercourse with their wives. It is prohibited for them to have sexual intercourse with their wives before setting free a slave. This atonement is prescribed to admonish them so that they shall not repeat such a matter. Allah is All-aware of what they do and nothing of their deeds is hidden from Him, Exalted be He. Allah will justly recompense them for their deeds, good or evil.

Abul Allah Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, said, ‘[58:3 And those of you who divorce their wives by Zihar, and they go back on what they have said…] If a man said to his wife, ‘You are like the back of mother to me,’ he will be unlawful for her and he cannot have sexual relationship with her until he atones for his oath by setting free a slave. If he is unable to set free a slave, he must fast for two successive months before having sexual intercourse with his wife, and if he is unable to do so, he must feed sixty poor persons. Touching, which is mentioned in the ayah means having sexual intercourse with one’s wife.’

58:4 And he who finds not the means, then he should fast two successive months before they touch one another. And if he is unable to do so, he should feed sixty poor persons. That is that you may believe in Allah and His Messenger. And these are the limits of Allah. And for the disbelievers is a painful torment.

If the husband, who said to his wife, ‘You are like the back of my mother to me, does not find the means to set free a slave for a legitimate reason, then he must fast for two successive months before having sexual relationship with his wife to atone for his oath.

Not finding the means can be not finding money to buy a slave or the non-existence of slaves to buy, which is the case in our era.

And if he is unable to do so, he should feed sixty poor persons.

If the husband is unable to fast for a legitimate reason, he must feed sixty poor persons before having sexual relationship with his wife to atone for his oath. He must give every one of them one kilo and a half of wheat, date, or the like.

Inability to fast can be due to sickness, old age, or suffering unbearable hardship when fasting.

The scholars agree that the atonement for az-Zihar must be done in order just as they are mentioned in the ayah. First is freeing a slave, then, fasting two successive months, and then feeding sixty poor persons. They also agree that whoever has sexual relationship with his wife before atoning for his oath disobeys Allah and commits a sin. He will not be acquitted of the atonement until he fulfills it.

That is that you may believe in Allah and His Messenger. And these are the limits of Allah. And for the disbelievers is a painful torment.

That rule, which says that those who make Zihar must atone for their oath, is prescribed to believe in the law that Allah has ordained, do not transgress it, believe the Messenger of Allah and abide by the rules of the Shariah and do not go beyond it. Do not go back to commit Zihar, which is an ill word and a lie. These rules about the Zihar are the limits of Allah; thus, comply with them and do not go beyond them. Allah has made clear to the believers that Zihar is an act of disobedience and has told them its atonement to forgive and pardon their sins. For the disbelievers, who disbelieve in the Oneness of Allah and go beyond the limits that He has set, is a painful torment in Hell in the Hereafter.

Learned Lessons from Surah Al-Mujadilah Ayah 1-4

Allah, Exalted be He, responds to the supplication of those who invoke Him sincerely believing that He will accept their invocation. Allah, Exalted be He, responded to the invocation of Khawla when she complained to Him and asked Him to remove her affliction. He, out of His mercy and bounty, has revealed ayat in the Quran about her case and prescribed rules that should be applied when Zihar takes place.

Complaining to Allah at times of sorrow and afflictions is the most successful method for overcoming them. Allah positively responded to the complaint of Khawla Bint Tha’labah and relieved her of her hardship.

Az-Zihar takes place by men, not women according to the opinion of the majority of the scholars. If a woman says to her husband, ‘You are like the back of my mother to me,’ she is not required to atone for her oath. That is because only the husband has the authority to divorce.

Az-Zihar, namely, when the husband says to his wife, ‘You are like the back of my mother to me, is unlawful and it is an ill word and a lie that is uttered by the husband. That is because his wife is not his mother. His mother is the person who gave birth to him.

Atonement for az-Zihar is setting free a slave, then fasting for two successive months, and then feeding sixty poor persons. The atonement for az-Zihar must be done before the couples have sexual intercourse with one another.

It is obligatory to obey the commands of Allah and not go beyond them. Those who go beyond the limits of Allah will suffer a painful torment.
