The Day of Resurrection Will Certainly Come

The Day of Judgment will come

This article mentions a clear English explanation of surah An-Nazi’at from ayah 1 to 14. 

79: 1 By those that pluck out vehemently,

79: 2 by those that take out briskly, 

79: 3 by those that glide swiftly, 

79: 4 by those that outstrip greatly, 

79: 5 and by those that carry out the commands. 

79: 6 On the day the quaking blow shakes

79: 7 and then the succeeding blow follows it, 

79: 8 some hearts will be trembling then. 

79: 9 Their eyes will be humbled. 

79: 10 They say, ‘Will we really be restored to our former state

79: 11 even after we become crumbled bones?’ 

79: 12 They say, ‘That then would be a losing return.’

79: 13 But it will be only a single cry 

79: 14 and then they will be above the ground. 

Tafsir 

79: 1 By those that pluck out vehemently,

‘Wa’ translated to ‘by’ in ayah 1-5 indicates oath, namely, I swear by these creatures that you will certainly be resurrected for reckoning on the Day of Judgment. 

The scholars differ about the meaning of ‘those that pluck out.’ These are their opinions. 1) They are the angles, who violently pluck out the souls of the disbelievers. 2) It refers to death as it plucks out the souls of human beings. 3) It refers to the souls at the time of death. 4) It refers to the stars as they set in a particular horizon and then shine in another one. 5) It refers to the arrows when they are pulled out of the bow. 6) It refers to wild animals as they move violently. 7) It refers to archers when they shoot arrows using bows [Zad al-Masyr fi Ilm at-Tafsir, ibn al-Jawzi]. 

After mentioning the opinions of the scholars, Imam Muhammad bin Jarir at-Tabari said, ‘The correct opinion is that Allah, Exalted be He, swears by those that pluck out vehemently and He does not specify a particular thing. Thus, the meaning includes whatever thing it may imply whether angels, death, a star, a bow, etc[Tafsir at-Tabari].’ 

The meaning of the ayah will be as follows: I swear by the angels that pluck out the souls of the disbelievers vehemently. 

79: 2 by those that take out briskly, 

The scholars have these opinions about the meaning of those that take out briskly: 1) It refers to the angels. 2) It refers to the believers’ souls that come out of their bodies briskly at the time of death. 3) It refers to death as it takes out the soul from the body. 4) It refers to the stars when they move from a particular horizon to another one. 5) It refers to the souls as they become active at the time of death [Zad al-Masyr fi Ilm at-Tafsir, ibn al-Jawzi]. 

After mentioning the opinions of the scholars, Imam Muhammad bin Jarir at-Tabari said, ‘The correct opinion is that Allah swears by those that take out gently and move from a place to another one swiftly. Allah does not specify a particular thing. Thus, the meaning includes whatever thing that it may imply whether the angels that move from one place to another one swiftly, the death, the stars, etc[Tafsir at-Tabari]. 

‘An-nashitat’ translated into ‘those that take out gently’ is used in the Arabic version. Nashat means to do something briskly and swiftly. Thus, the meaning of the ayah will be as follows: I swear by the angels that take out the souls of the believers briskly and easily, giving them the good news of the reward that Allah has prepared for them in the Hereafter. 

79: 3 by those that glide swiftly, 

I swear by those that glide swiftly in this universe to implement Allah’s commands and glorify, praise, and extol Him. 

The scholars mention these meanings for those that glide swiftly. 1) It refers to the angels that glide swiftly when they take out the believers’ souls like a swimmer, who glides gracefully in water. 2) It refers to the angels as they come down from heaven swiftly. 3) It refers to death as it glides in the souls of human beings. 4) It refers to ships that glide swiftly in water. 5) It refers to the stars, the sun, and the moon as they move in their orbit. 6) It refers to horses[Zad al-Masyr fi Ilm at-Tafsir, ibn al-Jawzi].  Imam Muhammad bin Jarir at-Tabari maintains that Allah swears by those that glide swiftly and He does not specify a particular thing. Thus, it may refer to everything that glides swiftly[Tafsir at-Tabari]. 

79: 4 by those that outstrip greatly, 

I swear by the angels that outstrip greatly other creatures to implement Allah’s commands. Those that outstrip greatly may refer to the following meanings: 1) It refers to the angels as they outstrip the devils when they convey Allah’s revelation to Allah’s Prophets, or as they take the believers’ souls to Paradise. 2) It refers to the believers’ souls that outstrip the angels because they long to meet Allah. 3) It refers to death as it takes the souls out of people’s bodies swiftly. 4) It refers to horses. 5) It refers to the stars as they outstrip one another[Zad al-Masyr fi Ilm at-Tafsir, ibn al-Jawzi].  

79: 5 and by those that carry out the commands. 

I swear by the angels that carry out Allah’s commands and manage the affairs of the creatures as Allah commands them. 

Allah, Exalted be He, swears by whatever He wants of His creatures, but the created beings are forbidden to swear by anything other than Allah. Whoever swears by anything other than Allah commits a grave sin. 

The thing that Allah swears for is omitted, namely, Allah swears that all creatures will be resurrected for reckoning on the Day of Judgment when the first cry takes place and the earth will be shaken and then the second cry follows it. 

79: 6 On the day the quaking blow shakes

79: 7 and then the succeeding blow follows it, 

On the Day of Judgment, the first cry will be blown. Thus, the earth will shake and this universe will become in a state of chaos. Then, all creatures will die. Then, the second cry, which follows the first one, will be blown. Thus, all creatures will be resurrected by Allah’s permission. 

79: 8 some hearts will be trembling then. 

79: 9 Their eyes will be humbled. 

When the Day of Judgment takes place, the hearts of some people will be trembling because of the horrors of this day. Their eyes will be humbled because of the great fear they will be experiencing. The hearts that will be frightened are the hearts of the disbelievers. They deny the occurrence of the Day of Judgment in the worldly life. Thus, when they are resurrected, they will suffer great fear and horror. On the other hand, the believers’ hearts will be assured and will not suffer any fear because they believe in Allah, His Messengers, and the occurrence of the Day of Judgment. This is mentioned in surah al-Nabiya’ [103] [The Great Horror will cause them no grief and the angels will meet them saying, ‘This is your day that you were promised.’] 

79: 10 They say, ‘Will we really be restored to our former state

79: 11 even after we become crumbled bones?’ 

79: 12 They say, ‘That then would be a losing return.’

Because the disbelievers deny the occurrence of the Day of Judgment in the worldly life, they mockingly say, ‘Will we really be restored to life after we die and become crumbled bones in our graves? If this happens, it would be a losing return because we disbelieve in the Messenger of Allah and we shall suffer from the torment that he warned us of.’ 

79: 13 But it will be only a single cry 

79: 14 and then they will be above the ground. 

The disbelievers have received a decisive response that would make them speechless. O disbelievers, the matter is not as you claim that there will be no resurrection and no reckoning on the Day of Judgment. The resurrection shall certainly take place and you will be returned to life after death for reckoning. It will happen after only a single cry and then you will be alive, come out of your graves, and be above the ground where Allah will gather all creatures for reckoning. Indeed, the resurrection is easy for Allah and it will happen immediately after the angel blows the first cry that will cause all creatures to die, and then the second blow that will cause all creatures to return to life will be blown. Verily, nothing is difficult for Allah, the Able. When He wants something to happen, He just says, ‘be’ and it takes place. 

Learned Lessons from Surah an-Nazi’at Ayah 1-14

Allah has sworn by the angels, who perform different duties, that the Day of Judgment will certainly take place. Allah has the right to swear by whatever of His creatures He wants, but human beings are forbidden to swear by anything other than Allah. 

The universe will completely be changed when the Day of Judgment takes place. The earth will quake, the mountains will be moved from their places, and all that on earth will die after the first cry is blown. Then all creatures will be returned to life after the second cry is blown.

The disbelievers, who deny the occurrence of the Day of Judgment in the worldly life, will suffer great horror when the Day of Judgment takes place. Their hearts will be terrified and their eyes will be humble because of the great terror they will be experiencing. 

In the worldly life, the disbelievers think that the occurrence of the Day of Judgment is impossible. They cannot imagine that they will be alive after death and becoming crumbled bones. Thus, they ridicule the fact that the Day of Judgment will happen. However, nothing is impossible for Allah, the Able. Everything is easy for Allah. The Day of Judgment will take place after just a single cry that will cause all living beings to die. Then after the second cry is blown, all creatures will be alive above the ground for reckoning.

The Noble Quran, Introduction to Tafsir of Surah an-Nazi’at

 

Quran Surah an-Nazi'at

Name of Surah an-Nazi’at 

It is called surah an-Nazi’at; namely, those that pluck out vehemently, because it begins with this word. It is also called surah at-Tamah, namely, the great catastrophe because it speaks about the Day of Judgment and some events that will take place then. As-Shariah, a flat, plantless ground, is another name of this surah. Surah an-Nazi’at was revealed in Mecca. 

Main Theme of Surah an-Nazi’at

Surah an-Nazi’at discusses topics related to the creed of Allah’s Oneness and the Day of Judgment just as all surahs revealed in Mecca. It confirms that people will be resurrected for reckoning on the Day of Judgment, which is easy for Allah, who created this wondrous universe with its great heavens, vast earth, and firm mountains. 

Relationship between Surah an-Nazi’at and Surah an-Naba’

First, surah an-Naba’ and an-Nazi’at speaks about the occurrence of the Day of Judgment, events that will take place then, and the abode of the good-doers and the evildoers in the Hereafter.

Second, the beginning and the conclusion of both surahs are similar. Both surahs begin with speaking about the resurrection on the Day of Judgment. Surah an-Nazi’at confirms that the Day of Judgment will come and refers to its horrors, while surah an-Naba’ begins with warning the disbelievers that the Day of Judgment will certainly take place and that they will know on that day the evil result of their disbelief in Allah’s Oneness. 

Third, surah an-Naba’ is concluded with warning of the imminent torment of the Day of Judgment; while surah an-Nazi’at is concluded with confirming that the Day of Judgment will take place soon no matter how long the duration of the worldly life may be.

Topics Discussed in Surah an-Nazi’at

Surah an-Nazi’at begins with swearing by the angels that pluck out the souls of the disbelievers vehemently to confirm that the Day of Judgment will certainly take place. Then it mentions some events that will take place on that day. 

79: 1 By those that pluck out vehemently,

79: 6 On the day the quaking blow shakes

79: 7 and then the succeeding blow follows it, 

After that, the surah refers to the conditions of the disbelievers on the Day of Judgment and that they will be extremely terrified because of the great horrors of that day.

79: 8 some hearts will be trembling then. 

79: 9 Their eyes will be humbled. 

79: 10 They say, ‘Will we really be restored to our former state

79: 11 even after we become crumbled bones?’ 

Then the surah mentions some of the story of Messenger Moses and Pharaoh, the tyrant. He disbelieved in Allah’s Oneness and claimed that he was the lord of people. The surah mentions the horrible end of Pharaoh and his soldiers, and that they were drowned so that it will be a lesson for those who benefit from admonition. 

79: 15 Have you heard about the story of Moses

79: 16 when his Lord called him in the holy valley, Towa? 

79: 25 So Allah punished him, making him an example in the Hereafter and this world. 

79: 26 Indeed, in that is a lesson for him who fears. 

Then surah an-Nazi’at mentions some proofs in the creation of the universe confirming Allah’s ability to demonstrate that the One, who created this wonderful universe with its marvelous heavens, vast earth, and firm mountains, is able to resurrect people for reckoning on the Day of Judgment.

79: 27 Is creating you harder or that of the sky? He built it. 

79: 28 He raised its height and made it flawless. 

79: 29 And He made dark its night and brought forth its daylight, 

Finally, the surah is concluded with referring to the evil end of the disbelievers and the happy end of the believers. It also mentions that the duty of Messenger Muhammad is to warn the evildoers of severe punishment and give good news to the righteous that their abode will be Paradise.

79: 34 Then, when the Great Catastrophe comes, 

79: 35 on that day man will remember what he did.

79: 45 You are only the warner for him who fears it.

79: 46 The day they will see it, it will be as if they had but remained for an afternoon or the morning thereof.

Tafsir of Surah an-Naba’ Ayah 31-40 Recompense of the Believers

 

The Noble Quran Surah an-Naba'

78: 31 Indeed, for the God-fearing will be success,

78: 32 Gardens and vineyards, 

78: 33 and full-bosomed maidens of equal age, 

78: 34 and a full cup. 

78: 35 They will hear neither idle talk nor lying therein. 

78: 36 This is a reward from your Lord, a sufficient bounty.

78: 37 The Lord of the heavens, the earth, and all that is between them, the Most Merciful, Whom they have no power to address. 

78: 38 On the day the Spirit and the angels stand in ranks, they shall speak not save him to whom the Most Merciful has given permission and says what is right. 

78: 39 That is the true day; so whoever wills should seek a way of return to his Lord. 

78: 40 Indeed, We have warned you of approaching torment on the day a man will see what his hands have forwarded, and the disbeliever will say, ‘Oh, I wish I were dust.’

Relationship with the Previous Part

The previous part mentions the conditions of the wicked wrongdoers in Hell. Then, this part mentions the reward prepared for the dwellers of Paradise, who will be successful and saved from Hell and its torment. Allah will give them such a reward out of His generosity. Mentioning the conditions of the wicked and the righteous calls for reflection, comparison, doing righteous deeds that lead to Paradise, and avoiding sins that lead to Hell. In sum, after mentioning the punishment of the disbelievers, the ayat mention the reward of the believers.

Tafsir 

78: 31 Indeed, for the God-fearing will be success,

78: 32 Gardens and vineyards, 

78: 33 and full-bosomed maidens of equal age, 

78: 34 and a full cup. 

78: 35 They will hear neither idle talk nor lying therein. 

Those who fear Allah by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions will be successful. They will attain Allah’s pleasure and enter Paradise wherein they will enjoy eternal bliss and be saved from Hell and its torment. 

In Paradise, the God-fearing will be in gardens that have fruitful trees and vineyards producing delicious grapes. They will have full-bosomed maidens of equal age as companions. Those full-bosomed maidens are beautiful, charming, and delicate. Moreover, the God-fearing will have full cups of pure wine that will be given to them successively, but, they will never be intoxicated by drinking this wine. 

The God-fearing will hear neither idle talk nor lying in Paradise. This indicates the sublimity and loftiness of its environment, which brings comfort and happiness to the soul in contrast to the environment of the worldly life. In such an environment, people usually hear what hurts the feeling and causes pain to the soul. There is no place for any absurd nor lying in Paradise, as it is the abode of peace and perfect happiness. 

78: 36 This is a reward from your Lord, a sufficient bounty.

Allah, Exalted be He, will reward the righteous believers such a great reward for their belief in His Oneness and performance of righteous deeds. He will grant them a sufficient bounty out of His generosity just as He has promised them to multiply their reward and forgive their sins. 

After mentioning the torment prepared for the wrongdoers and the reward prepared for the believers, the surah is concluded with referring to Allah’s Greatness, mercy, and comprehensive knowledge, especially, on the Day of Judgment. This day will certainly come. People will be divided into two parties on this day, a party whose abode will be Hell and a party whose abode will be Paradise. 

78: 37 The Lord of the heavens, the earth, and all that is between them, the Most Merciful, Whom they have no power to address. 

The generous reward that the believers will have in the Hereafter is from Allah, the Lord of the heavens, the earth, and all that is between them. He is their Creator, whose mercy encompasses everything. 

All those in the heavens, the earth, that is between them submit to Allah, their Lord. They have no power to address Him except after He gives them permission. 

78: 38 On the day the Spirit and the angels stand in ranks, they shall speak not save him to whom the Most Merciful has given permission and says what is right. 

The day refers to the Day of Judgment and the Spirit refers to the archangel Gabriel. On the Day of Judgment, the angel Gabriel and the other angels will submissively stand before Allah in ranks. They will not speak except after Allah, the Most Merciful, gives them permission and they say the right things that please Allah, Exalted be He.

 In sum, all creatures will stand submissively before Allah on the Day of Judgment and no one can speak except after Allah gives them permission and say what is right.  

78: 39 That is the true day; so whoever wills should seek a way of return to his Lord. 

The Day of Judgment will certainly take place. On that day, all creatures will submissively stand before Allah for reckoning for their deeds they did in the worldly life. Allah, Exalted be He, has made everything clear to people. He has shown them the right path and told them the reward they will attain if they follow it. He has also shown the path of misguidance and told them the punishment prepared for its followers. Thus, whoever wills should seek a way of return to his Lord, Allah, by following His commands and avoiding His prohibitions before the Day of Judgment comes and there will no opportunity for amendment; rather, there will be reckoning for what he did in the worldly life. 

78: 40 Indeed, We have warned you of approaching torment on the day a man will see what his hands have forwarded, and the disbeliever will say, ‘Oh, I wish I were dust.’

The surah is concluded with this eloquent warning, which is informing of the negative consequences of not heeding a warning at a time the warned person can avoid committing the warned thing. 

Allah, Exalted be He, has warned people of approaching torment on the Day of Judgment. On that day, the torment will be severe and people will see the consequences of what they did in the worldly life, as it will be precisely recorded in the book of deeds. When the disbeliever sees that all sins and wrongdoings he did in the worldly are recorded, he will say, ‘I wish I were dust.’ In other words, he will wish that he were dust in the worldly life, never created, never commanded to do certain things, and never resurrected for reckoning. However, it will be too late, as he can never escape the punishment prepared for the wicked disbelievers. 

In sum, no one will have any excuse on the Day of Judgment, as Allah, Exalted be He, has made the path of guidance and the path of misguidance clear for people and sent messengers, who conveyed to them Allah’s commands and prohibitions. 

Learned Lessons from Surah an-Naba’ Ayah 31-40

Allah has promised those who fear Him by obeying commands and avoiding His prohibitions to be saved from Hell and enter Paradise wherein they will enjoy bliss and happiness. 

Having beautiful gardens and vineyards are some examples of food security that the believers will enjoy in Paradise.

Enjoying the companionship of full-bosomed maidens of equal age represents an example of sexual satisfaction that the dwellers of Paradise will have.

Drinking full cups of pure wine that causes no drunkenness is a kind of permissible amusement that the believers will enjoy in Paradise.

The believers will enjoy psychological security in Paradise, as they will hear neither idle talk nor lies. In the worldly life, people speak indecently when they are drunken; however, the dwellers of Paradise will never speak idle talk, as the pure wine of Paradise will not affect negatively their minds. 

Greatness and Majesty are two attributes of Allah in the worldly life and the Hereafter. Allah is the Lord of the heavens, the earth, and all that is between them. He is the Most Merciful, whose mercy encompasses everything.

On the Day of Judgment, no one will be able to speak to Allah except after His permission and the speaker says what is right.

On the Day of Judgment, the angel Gabriel and the other angels will be in a state of submission to Allah, so how will be the condition of the other creatures?

The Day of Judgment will certainly take place and the torment prepared for the disbelievers will take place. Everything that will certainly happen is coming soon. 

On the Day of Judgment, every person will be recompensed for his deeds, good or evil.

On the Day of Judgment, when the disbelievers see the torment prepared for him for the sins he did in the worldly life, he will say, ‘I wish I were dust.’ He will hope that he was never created and never resurrected when he sees the great horrors of the Day of Judgment and the severe punishment prepared for the disbelievers.

Tafsir of Surah an-Naba’ Ayah 17-30 Signs & Horrors of the Day of Judgment

 

The Noble Quran Surah an-Naba'

78: 17 Indeed, the Day of Judgment is an appointed time. 

78: 18 The day the Trumpet is blown and you shall come in crowds.

78: 19 And the heaven is opened and it becomes gates, 

78: 20 and the mountains are moved away and become like a mirage. 

78: 21 Indeed, Hell lies in wait. 

78: 22 For the transgressors it is a destination.

78: 23 They will abide therein for ages. 

78: 24 They will not taste any coolness or drink therein

78: 25 save boiling water and pus. 

78: 26 That is fitting recompense. 

78: 27 Indeed, they hoped not for a reckoning 

78: 28 and they rejected Our proofs totally. 

78: 29 And everything We have recorded in a book. 

78: 30 So taste! We shall increase you nothing save in torment. 

Relationship with the Previous Part

The previous part mentions some proofs of Allah’s ability in creating human beings and this universe with its countless amazing signs confirming the Greatness of its Creator, Allah. Then this part confirms that the Day of Judgment will inevitably take place and that it has an appointed time that will not come early or delay. Allah alone knows when it will happen. It also mentions some signs of this day and that Hell will be the abode of the disbelievers, wherein they will suffer lasting torment.

Tafsir 

78: 17 Indeed, the Day of Judgment is an appointed time. 

On the Day of Judgment, it will be decided between the truth and falsehood. It will take place exactly at an appointed time that Allah has determined. On this day, Allah will raise people from their graves for reckoning and what follows it, i.e. rewarding the good-doers and punishing the wrongdoers. 

78: 18 The day the Trumpet is blown and you shall come in crowds.

Allah will command the angel Israfil to blow into the Trumpet to signal the occurrence of the Day of Judgment. Then people will come out of their graves in crowds and no one will fail to be in the place where they will be gathered for reckoning. Every nation will come with its messenger that Allah sent to it. 

78: 19 And the heaven is opened and it becomes gates, 

On the Day of Judgment, the sky will be opened. It will be split and cracked and become fragmented parts similar to gates though it was strong without any crack nor split. This indicates that the universe will change completely and its system and consistency will end. 

78: 20 and the mountains are moved away and become like a mirage. 

The great, firm mountains will be removed away from their places on the Day of Judgment. They will be destroyed and become dust. They will be like a mirage that a person sees in the distance and thinks that it is water though it is not. 

78: 21 Indeed, Hell lies in wait. 

Hell is the place that is prepared for punishing the wicked people. It lies in wait for the disbelievers so that they cannot escape from it. Hell is waiting for them like a vigilant guard, who lies in wait and no one can escape from him. The intended meaning is to warn the disbelievers and tell them that they will never be able to escape from the torment of Hell and that it is waiting for them just like someone waits for his enemy to destroy him. 

78: 22 For the transgressors it is a destination.

Hell is the destination that the transgressors will go to and the abode wherein they will stay forever. It is the only dwelling that they will remain in. 

78: 23 They will abide therein for ages. 

The wicked wrongdoers will abide in Hell for ages that no one knows but Allah, Exalted be He. 

78: 24 They will not taste any coolness or drink therein

78: 25 save boiling water and pus. 

78: 26 That is fitting recompense. 

In Hell, the wicked wrongdoers will not taste any coolness that may alleviate its heat, or drink that may quench their thirst. The only thing that they will find in Hell is boiling water and pus that comes out of their bodies. This terrible punishment is fitting recompense for their wickedness and their evil deeds that they did in the worldly life. Allah is just and the torment He has prepared for the wrongdoers is appropriate for their heinous deeds. 

78: 27 Indeed, they hoped not for a reckoning 

78: 28 and they rejected Our proofs totally. 

78: 29 And everything We have recorded in a book. 

78: 30 So taste! We shall increase you nothing save in torment. 

The wicked wrongdoers deserve such a horrible torment because they did not hope for reckoning on the Day of Judgment. In the worldly life, they never thought of the Day of Judgment and that they would be called to account for their sins. They never feared Allah’s punishment nor His anger. Rather, they totally rejected Allah’s proofs denoting His Oneness. However, Allah has precisely recorded all their wicked deeds in a book. The only thing the wicked wrongdoers will have in Hell is torment over torment. It will be said to them, ‘Taste! We shall increase you nothing save in torment.’
 

Learned Lessons from Surah an-Naba’ Ayah 17-30

Allah will judge between all creatures on the Day of Judgment and recompense them for their deeds.
The angel Israfil will blow into the Trumpet on the Day of Judgment. Then people will come out of their graves for reckoning, the heavens will split and become parts similar to gates, and the mountains will be moved away from their places and become like a mirage that a person thinks that it is water but it is not.
Hell is the destination that the wicked wrongdoers will abide in forever.
The wicked wrongdoers will suffer terrible torment in Hell. They will find no coolness that may alleviate its heat, nor drink that may quench their thirst. The only that they will drink is boiling water and pus that comes out of their bodies.
The severe torment that the wicked wrongdoers will suffer in Hell is fitting recompense for their evil deeds and horrible sins.
