Surah Al-Mujadilah:The Rule on Az-Zihar

Quran Surah Al-Mujadilah English Translation and Tafsir

English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Mujadilah Ayah 1-4

58:1 Indeed, Allah has heard the words of her that disputes with you concerning her husband, and complains to Allah. And Allah hears your conservation. Truly, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

58:2 Those of you who divorce their wives by Zihar – they are not their mothers. Their mothers are only those who gave them birth. And indeed, they utter an ill word and a lie. And indeed, Allah is All-Pardoning, All-Forgiving.

58:3 And those of you who divorce their wives by Zihar, and they go back on what they have said, they shall set free a slave before they touch one another. By that, you are admonished, and Allah is All-aware of what you do.

58:4 And he who finds not the means, then he should fast two successive months before they touch one another. And if he is unable to do so, he should feed sixty poor persons. That is that you may believe in Allah and His Messenger. And these are the limits of Allah. And for the disbelievers is a painful torment.

Cause of Revelation of First Ayat in Surah Al-Mujadilah

58:1 Indeed, Allah has heard the words of her that disputes with you concerning her husband, and complains to Allah. And Allah hears your conservation. Truly, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

Abu Al-‘Aliyah reported that Khawla Bint Tha’labah came to Prophet Muhammad [peace be upon him] while Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, was washing his head. Khawla said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have been married to my husband for a long time, and I have given birth to many children from him, but he has made zihar against me, namely, he divorced her by saying, ‘You are like the back of my mother to me.’ Messenger Muhammad said, ‘You are prohibited to him.’ Thus, Khawla said, ‘I complain to Allah about my need.’ Then she said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, ‘I have been married to my husband for a long time, and I have given birth to many children from my husband.’ Then, Messenger Muhammad said, ‘You are prohibited to him.’ Whenever Messenger Muhammad said to her, ‘You are prohibited to him.’ she would cry out and say, ‘I complain to Allah about my need.’ Then, the divine revelation came to Messenger Muhammad while Aisha was still washing his head. Thus, she beckoned to Khawla to stop speaking. Aisha said, ‘Whenever the divine revelation would come to Messenger Muhammad, something that is similar to a slumber would overcome him.’ When the coming of the divine revelation stopped, Messenger Muhammad said to Khawla, ‘Call you husband.’ Then, Messenger Muhammad recited to him, [58:1 Indeed, Allah has heard the words of her that disputes with you concerning her husband, and complains to Allah. And Allah hears your conservation. Truly, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.] When Messenger Muhammad reached this ayah [58:3 And those of you who divorce their wives by Zihar, and they go back on what they have said, they shall set free a slave before they touch one another.] he said to the husband of Khawla, ‘Can you set free a slave?’ He said, ‘No, I cannot.’ Then, Messenger Muhammad recited, [58:4 And he who finds not the means, then he should fast two successive months before they touch one another.] The husband of Khawla said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I fear that if I do not eat three meals a day that I may become faint.’ Then, Messenger Muhammad recited, [And if he is unable to do so, he should feed sixty poor persons.] Messenger Muhammad said to him, ‘Can you feed sixty poor persons?’ The husband of Khawla said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I cannot feed sixty poor persons except if you help me to do so.’ Thus, Messenger Muhammad helped him and he fed sixty poor persons.

Sayyid Qutb, may Allah have mercy on him, wrote, ‘In this surah, as in almost all surahs of this part of the Quran, we shall live with some events that took place during the early stages of the Islamic society in Al-Madinah. These events contribute to molding, reforming, and preparing it to undertake its universal role, which Allah has appointed for it in the circle and preordainments of this universe. It is a huge role that begins with establishing a new, complete, and comprehensive conception of life in the souls of this nascent group. It aims to establish a realistic life based on this conception. Then, this nascent group shall convey it to the whole world to establish human life based on this conception for all humanity. And it is a huge role that necessitates complete preparation. Those Muslims, whom the preordainment prepared for this huge role, were ordinary people. Some of them were among the early emigrants from Makkah and the helpers among the inhabitants of Al-Madinah, whose faith became stronger, their understanding of the new creed became firm, and their souls became dedicated to this creed. They found out the real cause of their existence in this life and the reality of this large existence on earth. Their existence in the earth merged with the reality of the universe; thus, they became a means for realizing the preordainment of Allah in the universe. They neither deviated from their goal nor lagged in their march to it. Moreover, they found nothing in their hearts, but Allah as they are described in this surah, [58:22 You shall not find any people, who believe in Allah and the Last Day, love those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even though they be their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their clan. Those – Allah has established faith in their hearts and He has strengthened them with spirit from Himself. And He shall admit them into Gardens underneath which rivers flow; they shall abide therein. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. Those are the party of Allah. Lo! Surely, the party of Allah shall be the successful.] However, these first Muslims were a minority in comparison with the ever-increasing number of the Muslim community, especially after Islam became an intimidating power even before the victory that made Makkah under the authority of the Muslims. After this victory, people embraced Islam, but some of them did not have sufficient Islamic education and did not live enough time in an Islamic environment. Furthermore, some hypocrites, who favored their interests or safety with their sick hearts and opportunist souls, embraced Islam. They were wavering between the Muslim community and the strong powers among the opponents of Islam then, whether the disbelievers or the Jews. Educating and preparing these souls for their great role on the earth that was preordained for it needed strenuous efforts, endless patience, and slow treatment in small and serious matters alike. This undertaking was a massive formation movement that Islam and Messenger Muhammad undertook to build souls and establish the Muslim community and the Islamic state. It was based on the divine approach with the intention to understand and realize it and convey it to the farthest part of the earth in the form of a live image, not pages and words. In this surah and the whole of this part of the Quran, we shall see some of these huge efforts and part of the Quranic method when it comes to educating such souls and dealing with events, customs, and whims. We shall also see a part of the long conflict that took place between Islam and its enemies among the disbelievers, the Jews, and the hypocrites. We shall particularly see in this surah an inspiring image revealing the care of Allah for this nascent Muslim community while He was establishing it under His care, bringing it up by His method, and making it feel His care for it. Moreover, Allah was establishing His presence in its consciousness even in its most private affairs, its smallest matters, and its most hidden intentions. Allah, Exalted be He, put this fledgling community under His care and protection and encompassed it under His banner and shade. He took care to mold its ethics, customs, and traditions in such a manner that the community, which is under the care of Allah, belongs to Him, represents His party on the earth, and raises His banner on the earth to be recognized as His party, deserves. Therefore, this surah begins a wondrous image representing this unique period of human history when there was contact between heaven and the earth, which was a real, direct image, by sharing in the affairs of its daily life with an obvious involvement. [58:1 Indeed, Allah has heard the words of her that disputes with you concerning her husband, and complains to Allah. And Allah hears your conservation. Truly, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.] Thus, we see that divine care intervenes in the daily affairs of a small, poor, humble family to decide the rule of Allah in its case. Indeed, Allah, Exalted be He, listened to the woman while she was discussing with Messenger Muhammad her matter. Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, could hardly hear the discussion though she was near the woman, which is an image that fills the heart with the certainty of the existence of Allah, His closeness to us, His love and care.’

Tafsir

58:1 Indeed, Allah has heard the words of her that disputes with you concerning her husband, and complains to Allah. And Allah hears your conservation. Truly, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

Indeed, Allah, Exalted be He, heard the words of the woman, Khawla, when she was complaining to Messenger Muhammad about the case of her husband, who made Zihar against her by saying, ‘You are like the back of my mother to me,’ which would make her unlawful to him like his mother. She was complaining about her grief and sorrow to Allah and Allah heard the conversation that took place between Messenger Muhammad and the woman for truly Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing. Allah, Exalted be He, hears all sounds and sees all things and nothing is hidden from Him.

It was reported that Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, passed with some people by a woman, who stopped for a long time and admonished him. She said, ‘O Umar, you used to be called Umeer when you were a child, and then you were called Umar. Then, you are called the Commander of the Believers. Thus, fear Allah, O Umar. Whoever is certain that he will die fears the passage of time; whoever is certain that reckoning on the Day of Judgment will take place fears the punishment.’ Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, kept listening to her. Then, it was said to him, ‘O Commander of the Believers, do you stop such a long time listening to this old woman? Umar said, ‘By Allah, if she would make me stop from the beginning of the day until it ends, I will keep listening to her save to perform an obligatory prayer. Do you know who this woman is? She is Khawla Bint Tha’labah. Allah has heard her speech while He is above seven heavens. Would Allah, the Lord of the worlds, hear speech, and Umar would not?’

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said, ‘Praise be to Allah Whose Hearing encompasses all sounds. The pleading woman, Khawla, came to Messenger Muhammad to complain to Messenger about her husband and I was beside her on one side of the house, but I could not hear what she was saying.’

Sayid Qutb, may Allah have mercy on him, wrote, ‘This is the case that a surah in the Quran begins with, the everlasting book of Allah, which every part of this universe is responsive to every word thereof while they are being revealed by Allah. This surah opens with such a statement, [58:1 Indeed, Allah has heard the words of her that disputes with you concerning her husband, and complains to Allah.] Thus, Allah is present while this personal matter of an ordinary woman among Muslims is taking place. Listening to it does not prevent Him, Exalted be He, from conducting the affairs of the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, nor does it prevent Him from deciding any matter of the matters of heavens, and the earth. Indeed, it is a serious matter that such an amazing event takes place, and that a community of people feel that Allah is with them. He, Exalted be He, is present while their affairs, great and small, happen, and that He cares about their daily problems, responsive to their ordinary crisis though He, Exalted be He, is High, Great, All-Powerful, and Almighty.’

Then, the following ayah mentions the rule on az-Zihar and the atonement required to make amends for it.

58:2 Those of you who divorce their wives by Zihar – they are not their mothers. Their mothers are only those who gave them birth. And indeed, they utter an ill word and a lie. And indeed, Allah is All-Pardoning, All-Forgiving.

Those who make their wives like their mothers by saying, ‘You are like the back of my mother to me,’ namely, their wives are like their mothers in terms of prohibition – their wives are not their mothers. Rather, their mothers are those who gave them birth. Such a statement is a lie that they utter. Their wives can never be like their mothers.

And indeed, they utter an ill word and a lie. And indeed, Allah is All-Pardoning, All-Forgiving.

Those who divorce their wives by resorting to Zihar utter an ill word and a lie that Islamic Shariah prohibits. And indeed, Allah is All-Pardoning, All-Forgiving. Allah has given them the means to atone for their wicked statement as He forgives the sins of those who repent of their sins and perform righteous deeds for His sake.

It is clear from the abovementioned Ayah that az-Zihar is an abominable practice as it likens the wife to her husband’s mother, which is a sheer lie. This confirms that the practice of az-Zihar is prohibited in Islamic Shariah. It is worth mentioning that az-Zihar was considered divorce during the time of pre-Islamic era which made the wife prohibited to her husband for good.

58:3 And those of you who divorce their wives by Zihar, and they go back on what they have said, they shall set free a slave before they touch one another. By that, you are admonished, and Allah is All-aware of what you do.

Those who make Zihar whereby their wives become prohibited for them, and then they want to revoke their oath, go back on what they have said, and have normal relationship with their wives, they must atone for their oath.

They must set free a slave before having sexual intercourse with their wives. It is prohibited for them to have sexual intercourse with their wives before setting free a slave. This atonement is prescribed to admonish them so that they shall not repeat such a matter. Allah is All-aware of what they do and nothing of their deeds is hidden from Him, Exalted be He. Allah will justly recompense them for their deeds, good or evil.

Abul Allah Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, said, ‘[58:3 And those of you who divorce their wives by Zihar, and they go back on what they have said…] If a man said to his wife, ‘You are like the back of mother to me,’ he will be unlawful for her and he cannot have sexual relationship with her until he atones for his oath by setting free a slave. If he is unable to set free a slave, he must fast for two successive months before having sexual intercourse with his wife, and if he is unable to do so, he must feed sixty poor persons. Touching, which is mentioned in the ayah means having sexual intercourse with one’s wife.’

58:4 And he who finds not the means, then he should fast two successive months before they touch one another. And if he is unable to do so, he should feed sixty poor persons. That is that you may believe in Allah and His Messenger. And these are the limits of Allah. And for the disbelievers is a painful torment.

If the husband, who said to his wife, ‘You are like the back of my mother to me, does not find the means to set free a slave for a legitimate reason, then he must fast for two successive months before having sexual relationship with his wife to atone for his oath.

Not finding the means can be not finding money to buy a slave or the non-existence of slaves to buy, which is the case in our era.

And if he is unable to do so, he should feed sixty poor persons.

If the husband is unable to fast for a legitimate reason, he must feed sixty poor persons before having sexual relationship with his wife to atone for his oath. He must give every one of them one kilo and a half of wheat, date, or the like.

Inability to fast can be due to sickness, old age, or suffering unbearable hardship when fasting.

The scholars agree that the atonement for az-Zihar must be done in order just as they are mentioned in the ayah. First is freeing a slave, then, fasting two successive months, and then feeding sixty poor persons. They also agree that whoever has sexual relationship with his wife before atoning for his oath disobeys Allah and commits a sin. He will not be acquitted of the atonement until he fulfills it.

That is that you may believe in Allah and His Messenger. And these are the limits of Allah. And for the disbelievers is a painful torment.

That rule, which says that those who make Zihar must atone for their oath, is prescribed to believe in the law that Allah has ordained, do not transgress it, believe the Messenger of Allah and abide by the rules of the Shariah and do not go beyond it. Do not go back to commit Zihar, which is an ill word and a lie. These rules about the Zihar are the limits of Allah; thus, comply with them and do not go beyond them. Allah has made clear to the believers that Zihar is an act of disobedience and has told them its atonement to forgive and pardon their sins. For the disbelievers, who disbelieve in the Oneness of Allah and go beyond the limits that He has set, is a painful torment in Hell in the Hereafter.

Learned Lessons from Surah Al-Mujadilah Ayah 1-4

• Allah, Exalted be He, responds to the supplication of those who invoke Him sincerely believing that He will accept their invocation. Allah, Exalted be He, responded to the invocation of Khawla when she complained to Him and asked Him to remove her affliction. He, out of His mercy and bounty, has revealed ayat in the Quran about her case and prescribed rules that should be applied when Zihar takes place.

• Complaining to Allah at times of sorrow and afflictions is the most successful method for overcoming them. Allah positively responded to the complaint of Khawla Bint Tha’labah and relieved her of her hardship.

• Az-Zihar takes place by men, not women according to the opinion of the majority of the scholars. If a woman says to her husband, ‘You are like the back of my mother to me,’ she is not required to atone for her oath. That is because only the husband has the authority to divorce.

• Az-Zihar, namely, when the husband says to his wife, ‘You are like the back of my mother to me, is unlawful and it is an ill word and a lie that is uttered by the husband. That is because his wife is not his mother. His mother is the person who gave birth to him.

• Atonement for az-Zihar is setting free a slave, then fasting for two successive months, and then feeding sixty poor persons. The atonement for az-Zihar must be done before the couples have sexual intercourse with one another.

• It is obligatory to obey the commands of Allah and not go beyond them. Those who go beyond the limits of Allah will suffer a painful torment.

English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Mujadilah

Introduction to English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Mujadilah

Name of the Surah Al-Mujadilah

This surah is called Al-Mujadilah, namely, the woman who disputed, because it begins by [qad samiʿa l-lahu qawla allati tujadiluka fī zawjiha], which is translated as follows: [58:1 Indeed, Allah has heard the words of her that disputes with you concerning her husband…]. The woman refers to Khawla bint Tha’labah, the wife of Aws ibn As-Samit, may Allah be pleased with them. Khawala disputed with Messenger Muhammad [peace be upon him] that her husband divorced her.

Surah Al-Mujadilah was revealed in Al-Madinah. It contains twenty-two ayah.

Relationship between Surah Al-Mujadilah and Surah Al-Hadid

Surah Al-Mujadilah comes after surah Al-Hadid according to the written copy of the Quran, al-Mushaf. Some of the sublime attributes of Allah are mentioned at the beginning of surah Al-Hadid, among which are the First, the Last, the most High, and the Unseen.

57:3 He is the First and the Last, and the most High and the Unseen, and He the All-Knower of all things.

Then, surah Al-Mujadilah mentions an example of the perfect knowledge of Allah, namely, Allah heard the disputing woman complain to Allah about the matter between her husband and her. Therefore, when [58:1 Indeed, Allah has heard the words of her that disputes with you concerning her husband, and complains to Allah.] was revealed, Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said, ‘All praise is due to Allah, whose hearing encompasses all sounds.’

Surah Al-Hadid is concluded by referring to the bounty of Allah, and surah Al-Mujadilah begins by referring what an example of the bounty of Allah.

Surah Al-Hadid mentions that Allah knows everything and nothing is hidden from Him.

57:4 It is He Who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then He rose on the Throne. He knows what enters into the earth and what comes forth from it, and what comes down from the heaven and what goes up unto it. And He is with you wherever you are. And Allah sees what you do.

Then, surah Al-Mujadilah gives a detailed example of the perfect and comprehensive knowledge of Allah.

58:7 Have you not seen that Allah knows all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth? There is no secret consultation between three, but He is the fourth of them, nor five, but He is the sixth of them, nor fewer than that, nor more, but He is with them wherever they may be. Then, He shall tell them what they have done on the Day of Judgment. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing of all things.

Most Important Topics Discussed in Surah Al-Mujadilah

The main theme of surah Al-Mujadilah is the same as the themes of surahs revealed in Al-Madinah. It focuses on legislative rules. Surah Al-Mujadilah refers to the rule of az-Zihar, which is a form of divorce in which the husband divorces his wife by saying, ‘You are like my mother to me.’ Besides, the surah mentions the atonement of az-Zihar, the rule on secret counseling, and the etiquette of assemblies. Surah Al-Mujadilah refers to the rule concerning the hypocrites, and their recompense, and mentions that they belong to the party of Satan. The surah touches on the subject of befriending the enemies of Allah and declares its rule.

An interesting characteristic in surah Al-Mujadilah is that the name of Allah is mentioned in every ayah, which generates reverence of Allah in the souls and leads not to dare to disobey Him, Exalted be He.

Surah Al-Mujadilah begins by stating that Allah, Exalted be He, heard the voice of a woman, Khawla bint Tha’labah, while she was arguing with Messenger Muhammad about the final rule on her relationship with her husband, Aws Ibn As-Samit, who said to her, ‘You are like the back of mother to me, namely, you are divorced.’ This statement is known as az-Zihar, which makes the wife permanently unlawful to her husband in the pre-Islamic era.

Allah, out of His mercy and bounty, has made the prohibition generated by uttering the statement of az-Zihar null and void by giving the atonement mentioned in the surah, namely, freeing a slave, fasting for two consecutive months, feeding sixty needy persons, respectively.

58:4 And he who finds not the means, then he should fast two successive months before they touch one another. And if he is unable to do so, he should feed sixty poor persons. That is that you may believe in Allah and His Messenger. And these are the limits of Allah. And for the disbelievers is a painful torment.

Then, surah Al-Mujadilah mentions that Allah has decreed that He will humiliate and disgrace those who oppose Allah and His Messenger. Allah, Exalted be He, has recorded their deeds and He will justly recompense them for them.

58:5 Verily, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger shall be disgraced as those before them were disgraced. And We have revealed clear signs. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating torment.

58:6 On the day when Allah shall raise them all, then He shall tell them what they did. Allah has recorded it while they have forgotten it. And Allah is a Witness over all things.

After that, surah Al-Mujadilah mentions some etiquettes of secret counseling in the assemblies, namely, how two or three persons can perform secret counseling in the assemblies. It also points out that secret counsel is prohibited if it is about supporting sinning and hostility. Surah Al-Mujadilah mentions that Allah is All-Knowing. He knows the secret and the public and nothing is hidden from Him.

58:8 Have you not seen those who were forbidden from secret consultation, then they return to what they were forbidden? And they counsel secretly for sinning, hostility, and disobedience of the Messenger. And when they come to you, they greet you with what Allah has not greeted you. And they say within themselves, ‘Why does not Allah punish us for what we say?’ Sufficient for them is Hell wherein they shall be burnt. How an evil end it is!

Then, surah Al-Mujadilah points out that people should make room for one another in the assemblies, which will generate harmony among them. It also praises the believers, who obey the commands of Allah and His Messenger. It also has made offering charity before making a secret counsel with Messenger Muhammad obligatory. Then, this rule was abrogated to make it easy for the believers to have secret counsel with their Prophet and Messenger Muhammad. Performing the prayer, giving the zakat, and obeying Allah and His Messengers are made substitutes for offering charity.

58:11 O you who believe, when it is said to you make room in the assemblies, then make room and Allah will make room for you: and when it is said, ‘Rise, then rise.’ Allah will raise in ranks those who believe among you and have been given knowledge. And Allah is aware of what you do.

58:12 O you who believe, when you want to make a secret counsel with the Messenger, then offer charity before your counsel. That is better for you and purer. But if you do not find means, then surely Allah is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

After that, surah Al-Mujadilah exposes the hypocrites, who befriend and love the Jews. They also disclose the secrets of the believers to the Jews and swear false oaths. Moreover, the hypocrites oppose Allah and His Messenger Muhammad and disobey their commands. They will be humiliated and defeated and the believers will be honored and victorious.

58:14 Have you seen those who befriend a people against whom Allah is wrathful? They belong neither to you nor to them. And they swear falsely while they know.

58:15 Allah has prepared for them a severe punishment. Evil indeed is what they used to do.

58:18 On the day when Allah shall raise them all, then they shall swear to Him, as they swear to you, and think they are on something. Indeed, they are the liars!

58:19 Satan has gained control over them and made them forget the remembrance of Allah. Those are the party of Satan. Lo! Surely, the party of Satan shall be the losers!

Finally, surah Al-Mujadilah is concluded by commanding the believers to avoid the treacherous, who befriend the enemies of Islam, even if they are the closest relatives to them. The treacherous waver between the believers and the disbelievers to weaken the believers and cause discord among them.

58:22 You shall not find any people, who believe in Allah and the Last Day, love those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even though they be their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their clan. Those – Allah has established faith in their hearts and He has strengthened them with spirit from Himself. And He shall admit them into Gardens underneath which rivers flow; they shall abide therein. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. Those are the party of Allah. Lo! Surely, the party of Allah shall be the successful.

English Translation of Surah Al-Mursalat Recompense of the Believers

Quran English Translation Tafsir Surah Al-Mursalat

English Translation of Surah Al-Mursalat Ayah 41-50

Recompense of the Believers

77:41 Indeed, the God-fearing shall be in amid shades and springs,

77:42 and fruits, such as they desire.

77:43 ‘Eat and drink wholesomely for what you used to do.’

77:44 Indeed, thus We recompense the good-doers.

77:45 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

77:46 ‘Eat and enjoy yourselves a little; truly, you are wicked.’

77:47 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

77:48 And when it is said to them, ‘Prostrate yourselves!’ They do not prostrate.

77:49 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

77:50 Then, in what discourse after this will they believe?

Relationship with the Previous Part

The previous part mentions some types of severe punishments that Allah has prepared for the disbelievers on the Day of Judgment.  Then, this part refers to some types of bliss that Allah has prepared for the pious believers in Hereafter, which agrees with the unique characteristic of the style of the Quran. It mentions something, and then it mentions its opposite to make the concept clear and bring home the intended meaning.
Moreover, the disbelievers are warned and told that the pleasures of life of this world will soon vanish. They are also rebuked for their failure to obey Allah and perform righteous deeds for His sake.

Tafsir

77:41 Indeed, the God-fearing shall be in amid shades and springs,

77:42 and fruits, such as they desire.

The pious believers, who fear Allah by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions in worldly life, shall be admitted into Paradise. They shall be enjoying its gardens, shades, springs, and fruits. They shall enjoy eating different kinds of fruits that they desire.

77:43 ‘Eat and drink wholesomely for what you used to do.’

It will be said to the God-fearing in the Hereafter, ‘Eat and drink wholesomely from the tasty food and drink of Paradise for the righteous deeds that you used to do in the worldly life.’
The command in the ayah is not an order that must be carried out; rather, it is a statement for honoring.

77:44 Indeed, thus We recompense the good-doers.

This is the recompense that Allah has prepared for the good-doers, who obey His commands, avoid His prohibitions, and perform righteous deeds for His sake. Allah will never make the righteous deeds of the believers fruitless.

77:45 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

Grievous torment and disgrace are for the deniers, who disbelieve in the Oneness of Allah and disobey His commands.

77:46 ‘Eat and enjoy yourselves a little; truly, you are wicked.’

Threateningly, it will be said to the disbelievers, ‘Eat from the food of this world and enjoy its pleasures for a little while, which will end when you die. Then, you shall be humiliatingly driven into Hell, where you shall suffer painful punishment. Truly, you are wicked as you disbelieve in the Oneness of Allah and disobey His commands.’

77:47 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

Woe to the deniers, who disbelieve in the Oneness of Allah and disobey His commands, on the Day of Judgment.

77:48 And when it is said to them, ‘Prostrate yourselves!’ They do not prostrate.

When the disbelievers are commanded to pray and prostrate themselves before Allah, they arrogantly refuse to do so in the life of this world. Likewise, they shall be unable to prostrate themselves before Allah in the Hereafter just as they refused to do so in the worldly life.
Qatada, may Allah have mercy on him, said, ‘ 77:48 And when it is said to them, ‘Prostrate yourselves!’ They do not prostrate. You should bow well in the prayer for the prayer has a great rank with Allah.’ He also reported that Abdul Allah Ibn Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him, saw a man praying without bowing, and he saw another man wearing a very long garment that reached the floor. Thus, he laughed. He was asked, ‘Why are you laughing?’ He said, ‘Two men made me laugh. One of them, ‘Allah will not accept his prayer.’ And the other, ‘Allah will not look at him.’

77:49 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

Woe to the deniers, who deny the Oneness of Allah and disbelieve in His Messengers. They will suffer severe torment on the Day of Judgment.

77:50 Then, in what discourse after this will they believe?

Then, in what discourse after this Quran will the disbelievers believe? Though the Quran is clear and contains irrefutable evidence confirming the Oneness of Allah and the truthfulness of His Prophets and Messengers, the disbelievers reject believing in it. What discourse after it they will believe? They will not believe because their refusal is out of arrogance and not because of not finding clear and strong evidence.
Imam Muhammad Ibn Jarir At-Tabari said, ‘Allah, Exalted be He, informs that if the disbelievers refuse to believe in the news mentioned in the Quran, whose proofs are truthful, they will not able to believe in any news that they do not see its source. Likewise, if they believe in anything that they do not see its sources because of the presence of supporting proof, they must believe in the news of the Quran. And Allah knows best.’

Learned Lessons from Surah Al-Mursalat Ayah 41-50

• Allah has prepared a great reward for the God-fearing in Paradise. They will enjoy its lasting pleasures.
• The God-fearing believers will be delighted under the shades of the trees and palaces of Paradise, and enjoy eating from its tasty fruits.
• No matter how long the disbelievers enjoy the pleasures of this world, its duration is short in comparison to the lasting life of the Hereafter.
• The disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah are wicked as they refuse to follow the right path and favor the fleeting life of this world over the lasting world of the Hereafter.
• Just as the disbelievers refuse to prostrate themselves before Allah in the life of this world, they will be unable to prostrate themselves before Him in the Hereafter, which is a fitting punishment for their wickedness.
• The disbelievers reject believing in the Quran, which is the inimitable evidence confirming the truthfulness of Messenger Muhammad. Thus, their rejection was out of stubbornness and arrogance. Then, in which discourse will they believe?

Quran_Surah_Al_Mursalat_English_Tafsir_Translation

English Translation of Surah Al-Mursalat Ayah 29-40

The Severe Punishment Awaiting the Disbelievers

77:29 ‘Proceed to that which you used to deny.

77:30 Proceed to a shadow that has three branches,

77:31 neither shading nor availing against the flame.’

77:32 Indeed, it throws sparks as palaces,

77:33 as if they were black-yellow camels.

77:34 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

77:35 This is a Day on which they shall not speak,

77:36 nor shall be permitted to put forth excuses.

77:37 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

77:38 This is the Day of Decision; We have gathered you and the ancients.

77:39 Now, if you have a plan, then plan against Me.

77:40 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

Relationship with the Previous Part

Allah, Exalted be He, warns the disbelievers of the punishment of the Day of Judgment in the previous part. Then, He mentions details about the punishment He has prepared for them in the Hereafter in this part. They will suffer painful torment in Hell and be exposed before all people on the Day of Judgment, as they have no excuse for following the path of misguidance.

Tafsir

77:29 ‘Proceed to that which you used to deny.

77:30 Proceed to a shadow that has three branches,

77:31 neither shading nor availing against the flame.’

To humiliate and degrade the disbelievers, it will be said to the disbelievers on the Day of Judgment, ‘Proceed to that which you used to deny in the worldly life. Proceed to the punishment that you used to deny in the worldly life.’

O disbelievers, ‘Proceed to the punishment of Hell. It has a shadow that has three branches that come from the glow of its fire. The shade of Hell neither protects against the heat of the fire nor avails against its flame.’

Allah, Exalted be He, describes the shade that comes from Hell as follows: 1) It rises from its fire and is divided into three branches. 2) It does not protect against the heat of Hell. 3) It does not avail against the flame of Hell.

The smoke that rises from the flame of Hell is called shade to mock and deride the disbelievers. On the Day of Judgment, they will suffer the severe torment of Hell, which is extremely hot. They will extremely need shade to provide them protection against such extreme heat. Alas! The shade will be a source of intensifying their torment. Wherever the disbelievers move, they shall find the painful torment of Hell surrounding them. They can never escape it.

77:32 Indeed, it throws sparks as palaces,

77:33 as if they were black-yellow camels.

Indeed, Hell throws the deniers of the truth with sparks as big as palaces. The sparks are like black-yellow camels as to their darkness and swiftness.

The colors of the flames of Hell are likened to yellow camels because their color becomes yellowish as they get very hot.

Allah, Exalted be He, likens the flames of Hell to a palace as to its hugeness, and He also likens them to yellow camels as to their color, swiftness, and crowdedness. The purpose behind this simile is to magnify the horrors of Hell. The disbelievers deny the occurrence of the Day of Judgment and the recompense of deeds on that day. Thus, Allah, Exalted be He, has given a vivid and horrifying description of Hell and its punishment so that they may amend their way and desist from disbelieving in His Oneness as they see fire and its sparks in this world, which cannot be compared to Hell.

77:34 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

Severe torment and humiliation are awaiting the disbelievers on the Day of Judgment. They can never escape it.

77:35 This is a Day on which they shall not speak,

77:36 nor shall be permitted to put forth excuses.

The ayah eloquently describes the condition of the disbelievers when they will be brought before Hell and will be about to be thrown therein.

On the Day of Judgment, the disbelievers shall not be able to speak and utter any words that can benefit them and save them from the punishment of Hell. They shall not be permitted to put forth any excuse that may protect them from Hell and its painful torment. That is because their excuses come too late.

The fact that the disbelievers shall not be able to speak mentioned in the above ayah does not contradict other ayat in the Quran that mention that the disbelievers shall speak. That is because the disbelievers shall not be able to speak in some situations and be able to speak in others.

The intended meaning is to demonstrate that the disbelievers have no excuse for disbelieving in the Oneness of Allah and their wickedness. It also shows that the disbelievers shall not be able to protect themselves against the punishment of Allah.

77:37 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

Severe torment is awaiting the disbelievers on the Day of Judgment if they insist on following the path of misguidance until they die.

77:38 This is the Day of Decision; We have gathered you and the ancients.

77:39 Now, if you have a plan, then plan against Me.

It will be said to the disbelievers on the Day of Judgment, ‘This is the Day of Decision on which Allah will decide the matter between the creatures. He, Exalted be He, will gather all creatures, the former and the latter, and recompense them according to their deeds. On the Day of Judgment, the truth will be distinguished from falsehood. Now, if you have a plan to save you from the punishment of Allah, which He has prepared for you, then plan against Allah. You will never be able to carry out any plan.

This statement to the disbelievers indicates the greatest form of scolding, degradation, humiliation, and rebuking.

77:40 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

Painful torment is awaiting those who deny resurrection on the Day of Judgment on which their powerlessness will be clear. They will be unable to save themselves from the severe punishment of Hell.

Learned Lessons from Surah Al-Mursalat Ayah 29-40

• The disbelievers will be strongly rebuked on the Day of Judgment. It will be said to them, ‘Proceed to the torment of Hell that you used to deny in the worldly life.’

• The torment of Hell is severe. Its shade will rise and be divided into three branches, but it will not avail against the heat of its fire.

• The fire of Hell will produce great sparks that are similar to a great palace as to their hugeness and similar to yellow camels as to their color and swiftness.

• The disbelievers will have no excuse to present on the Day of Judgment that may save them from the severe punishment that Allah has prepared for them for their disbelief in His Oneness and following the path of misguidance. They will be unable to protect themselves or escape from the torment of Hell.

• Allah, Exalted be He, will gather all creatures on the Day of Judgment and decide the matter between them. He will recompense them according to their deeds.

• The disbelievers will never be able to find any plan that may save them from the torment of Hell.

Quran Surah Al-Mursalat Tafsir

English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Mursalat Ayah 16-28

Warning the Disbelievers of the Evil End of Denying the Truth

77:16 Did We not destroy the ancients?

77:17 Then, We shall make the later ones follow them.

77:18 Thus, do We deal with the wicked.

77:19 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

77:20 Did We not create you from a fluid, contemptible?

77:21 Then, We make it stay in a secure place

77:22 until an appointed term.

77:23 Thus, We determined. How excellent We are determiners!

77:24 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

77:25 Have We not made the earth a receptacle

77:26 for the living and the dead,

77:27 and We have made therein firm lofty mountains, and We have given you to drink fresh water?

77:28 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

Relationship with the Previous Part

The disbelievers are warned of the severe punishment of Allah on the Day of Judgment in the previous part. Then, the disbelievers are warned of the evil end of denying the truth by referring to the punishment that befell the former disbelieving nations. Allah, Exalted be He, has warned the disbelievers of the evil consequence of their ingratitude for His blessings on them. Moreover, this part mentions some proofs of the perfect ability of Allah. He created man in the best form and made the earth a comfortable place so that he could live on it easily.

Tafsir

77:16 Did We not destroy the ancients?

77:17 Then, We shall make the later ones follow them.

The interrogation in the ayah is for confirmation. The goal behind it is to elicit confession and acknowledgment from the disbelievers about the trueness of resurrection on the Day of Judgment. That is because the One, Who is able to destroy, is able to recreate.

Allah, Exalted be He, destroyed the ancient disbelievers, who disbelieved in their Messengers, such as the people of Noah, Aad, and Thamud. Allah is able to make the later generations follow them. He is able to destroy them if they insist on disbelieving in the Oneness of Allah and disbelieving in His Prophets and Messengers.

77:18 Thus, do We deal with the wicked.

Thus, Allah will deal with the wicked. He will destroy them if they insist on following the path of misguidance until they die.

77:19 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

Humiliation and punishment will be to those who deny the Oneness of Allah on the Day of Judgment.

77:20 Did We not create you from a fluid, contemptible?

77:21 Then, We make it stay in a secure place

77:22 until an appointed term.

Allah, Exalted be He, reminds people of His blessings on them as He brought them to this life. He is able to resurrect them on the Day of Judgment for reckoning.

O people, did Allah not create you from a contemptible fluid? Then, He made the fluid stay in a secure place in the womb of the female until an appointed term, which only Allah knows. The embryo strays in the womb of his mother for the appointed term, namely, the pregnancy period.

77:23 Thus, We determined. How excellent We are determiners!

Allah, Exalted be He, praises Himself with all kinds of compliments that He deserves. Allah, Exalted be He, will make the embryo stay in the womb of the female until the term that He appointed. Allah determined this term accurately. He creates the embryo in stages in the womb of his mother and He will make it come therefrom at the time He appointed. How excellent Allah determines the creation! How excellent Allah created the creatures!

77:24 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

Woe to the deniers on the Day of Judgment. Destruction and humiliation will be for the deniers on the Day of Judgment as they insist on following the path of misguidance until they die.

Allah, Exalted be He, mentions another proof confirming that the Day of Judgment will certainly take place.

77:25 Have We not made the earth a receptacle

77:26 for the living and the dead,

77:27 and We have made therein firm lofty mountains, and We have given you to drink fresh water?

Allah, Exalted be He, has made the earth a receptacle, wherein all creatures stay, the living and the dead. The living stay on the surface of the earth and the dead are buried under its surface. Allah, the Able, has also created firm lofty mountains on the earth. Moreover, Allah, the Generous, has given people fresh water to drink.

77:28 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

Woe to the deniers on the Day of Judgment. They will experience severe torment in the Hereafter for their disbelief in the Oneness of Allah.

Learned Lessons from Surah Al-Mursalat Ayah 16-28

• The Day of Judgment will certainly take place at the appointed term that Allah has set for its occurrence.

• On the Day of Judgment, Allah will justly decide the matter between people and He will recompense them according to their deeds, good or evil.

• Allah, the Able, destroyed the disbelievers among the ancient people. He will also destroy the disbelievers among the later generations if they insist on disbelieving His Oneness and following the path of misguidance.

• The disbelievers will suffer severe punishment and humiliation on the Day of Judgment.

• The blessings of Allah are countless. Those who deny His blessings on them and insist on disobeying His commands will reap the evil outcome of their denial.

• Allah, out of His mercy, created man in the best form in the womb of his mother, which is a secure place wherein the embryo stays until the appointed term that Allah has set for it.

• Some aspects of the perfect ability of Allah are creating the earth wherein all creatures stay, the living and the dead, and creating firm lofty mountains on the earth.

• Another aspect of the perfect ability of Allah is that He has given people fresh water to drink.

Surah Al-Mursalat:The Occurrence and Signs of the Day of Judgment

Quran English Translation Tafsir Surah Al-Mursalat

The Noble Quran: English Translation of Surah Al-Mursalat Ayah 1-15

77:1 By that sent forth successively.

77:2 And by that blow violently.

77:3 And by that spread far and wide.

77:4 And by that separate with a distinct separation.

77: 5 And by that deliver a reminder,

77:6 cutting off excuses or warnings.

77:7 Indeed, what you are promised shall come to pass.

77:8 When the stars shall be put out,

77:9 and heaven shall be split,

77:10 and the mountains shall be blown away.

77:11 And when the messengers’ time is set.

77:12 For what Day are they delayed?

77:13 For the Day of Decision.

77:14 And what shall make you know what the Day of Decision is?

77:15 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

Tafsir

77:1 By that sent forth successively.

77:2 And by that blow violently.

77:3 And by that spread far and wide.

77:4 And by that separate with a distinct separation.

77: 5 And by that deliver a reminder,

77:6 cutting off excuses or warnings.

Allah, Exalted be He, swears by the winds when they blow successively, the winds that blow violently, and the angels responsible for the clouds as they drive them by the will of Allah to different places. He also swears by the angels that Allah sent with the revelation containing what distinguishes the truth from falsehood, and the angels that bring the revelation of Allah to His Prophets. By bringing the revelation of Allah to His Prophets, the excuses of people will be cut off and they will be warned of the evil consequences of following the path of misguidance.

77:1 By that sent forth successively.

The scholars of Tafsir mention the following meanings for [77:1 By that sent forth successively.]: 1) They are the winds when they blow successively. 2) They are the angels that Allah sends with His commands and prohibitions. 3) They are the messengers of Allah. 4) They are the angels and the winds.

After mentioning the opinions of the scholars, Imam Muhammad Ibn Jarir At-Tabari said, ‘The correct opinion is that Allah, Exalted be He, swears by that sent forth successively. The angels may be sent forth, and the winds may also be sent forth. No one of these meanings is intended to the exclusion of the other. Allah, Exalted be He, swears by all that is sent forth. Thus, all that have such a description are included in the oath whether an angel, wind, or a human Messenger sent by Allah.

As for the meaning of [77:2 And by that blow violently.], the majority of scholars say that they refer to the winds when they blow violently. However, some scholars maintain that they refer to the angels when they take the souls of the disbelievers violently.

The scholars of Tafsir mention the following meanings for [77:3 And by that spread far and wide.]: 1) They are the winds as they spread the clouds, which is the opinion of the majority of the scholars. 2) They are the angels as they spread the scriptures. 3) They are the records of the deeds of people as they are spread before Allah, Exalted be He. 4) It refers to the Day of Judgment when the souls of people shall be spread. 5) It refers to rain that causes plants to spread.

After mentioning the opinions of the scholars, Imam Muhammad Ibn Jarir At-Tabari said, ‘The correct opinion is that Allah, Exalted be He, swears by that spread far and wide. He, Exalted be He, has not specifically referred to a particular thing. The wind spreads the clouds, the rain spreads plants on the earth, and the angels spread the divine scriptures. No one of these meanings is intended to the exclusion of the other meanings. Thus, all that agree with this description are included in the oath.’

As for [77:4 And by that separate with a distinct separation.], the scholars have these four opinions about its meaning: 1) They are the angels that distinguish the truth from falsehood, which is the opinion of most scholars. 2) It refers to the Quran as it differentiates between the lawful and the unlawful. 3) It refers to the winds that separate the clouds. 4) It refers to the Messengers of Allah. Moreover, the scholars of Tafsir mention these two opinions about the meaning of [77: 5 And by that deliver a reminder,] 1) It refers to the angels as they convey the divine revelation to the Prophets of Allah, which is the opinion of the majority of the scholars. 2) It refers to the Messengers of Allah as they convey the divine revelation to people.

After mentioning the opinions of the scholars, Imam Muhammad Ibn Jarir At-Tabari said, ‘The correct opinion is that Allah, Exalted be He, swears by that separate with a distinct separation. They distinguish the truth from falsehood. Allah, exalted be He, has not specifically referred to a particular thing to the exclusion of other things. Thus, Allah swears by that separate the truth from falsehood whether an angel, the Quran, or other things.’

77:6 cutting off excuses or warnings.

The angels convey the divine revelation to the Prophets of Allah, who convey it to people, to remove any excuse that those who reject believing in the Oneness of Allah may use. They may say that no warner of the punishment of Allah has come to them. Allah, Exalted be He, has sent His Prophets and Messengers to give good news to the believers and warn the disbelievers of the painful punishment of Allah.

77:7 Indeed, what you are promised shall come to pass.

This is the answer statement for the abovementioned oaths. Indeed, by the winds sent to punish the disbelievers, by the angels whom Allah sent to convey the divine revelation to the Messengers of Allah and distinguish the truth from falsehood, you shall be resurrected for reckoning on the Day of Judgment. You shall certainly be recompensed for your deeds, good or evil. Indeed, the Day of Judgment will take place and there is no doubt in its occurrence.

77:8 When the stars shall be put out,

77:9 and heaven shall be split,

77:10 and the mountains shall be blown away.

The ayat mentions some signs of the Day of Judgment.

On the Day of Judgment, the stars shall put out and their lights shall disappear. Heaven will be split and become frail, and the mountains shall be blown away and become dust.

77:11 And when the messengers’ time is set.

77:12 For what Day are they delayed?

77:13 For the Day of Decision.

When the Messengers shall be gathered and an appointed time is set for them to give their testimonies and decide between them and their nations.

It will be said, ‘For what Day are the Messengers delayed? For what Day the Messengers’ time is set? When this Day will come?’  Then, the answer be given. They are delayed for the Day of Decision when Allah will gather all people for reckoning. On that Day, the oppressed will be given their rights from the oppressors, the good-doers will be rewarded for their righteous deeds, and the evil-doers will be punished for their evil deeds.

77:14 And what shall make you know what the Day of Decision is?

77:15 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

What shall make you know what the Day of Decision is? It is a great, horrifying day. No one can imagine its horrors. Only Allah knows the degree of its horrors. Woe on the Day of Judgment to the deniers, who deny the truth that the Messengers of Allah brought.

77:15 Woe on that Day to the deniers!

This ayah is repeated ten times in surah al-Mursalat to warn and threaten the deniers of the truth and emphasize that their punishment will be severe.

Learned Lessons from Surah Al-Mursalat Ayah 1-15
