Name of the Surah
This surah is called ‘Al-Mulk, the dominion’ because it begins with exalting and glorifying Allah, the King of the heavens, the earth, and all that is on them. Allah has absolute authority in this universe and does, as He wants. Surah Al-Mulk was revealed in Makkah. It contains thirty ayat.
Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that Prophet Muhammad [peace be upon him] said, ‘There is a surah in the Quran that contains thirty ayahs. It will intercede for its reciter until his sins are forgiven, namely, [67:1 Blessed is He in Whose hand is the dominion…] surah Al-Mulk.’
Relationship between Surah Al-Mulk and At-Tahrim
Surah Al-Mulk comes after surah At-Tahrim according to the written copy of the Quran, al-Mushaf. Surah Al-Mulk confirms the purport of surah Al-Tahrim, namely, demonstrating Allah’s perfect ability and His complete support to His Messenger Muhammad [peace upon him]. On the other hand, surah Al-Mulk establishes the fact that Allah owns all that is in the heavens, the earth, and all that are in them, and that His ability is perfect.
At the end of surah At-Tahrim, it is mentioned two examples of disbelievers and believers, namely, the wife of Prophet Noah and Lot, and the wife of Pharaoh and Mary, the mother of Prophet Jesus, respectively. Then, surah Al-Mulk demonstrates Allah’s perfect knowledge and ability. He, out of His perfect wisdom, causes amazing things to happen in this universe. Though the wives of Prophet Noah and Lot were disbelievers, they were married to noble Prophets of Allah, which is an amazing thing. Moreover, though the wife of Pharaoh was a believer, she was married to a disbeliever, and though Mary was virgin, she gave birth to her son Prophet Jesus, which was an amazing thing.
Most Important Topics Discussed in Surah Al-Mulk
The main theme of surah Al-Mulk, like all surahs revealed in Makkah, is the principles of Islamic creed, namely, confirming that Allah exists, that He is One, that He is great and able, and demonstrating His Oneness by referring to some wonders in the universe, and affirming that the Day of Judgment will take place.
In the beginning, surah Al-Mulk speaks about exalting and glorifying Allah by mentioning that He is the only King of the universe and all that is in it and that He alone can cause death and give life.
67:1 Blessed is He in Whose hand is the dominion and He is powerful over all things,
67:2 who created death and life that He may test you which of you is best in conduct, and He is the All-Mighty, the All-Forgiving,
Surah Al-Mulk confirms that Allah exists by referring to the fact that He created the seven heavens and adorned the lower heaven with beautiful stars, and He has made them shooting stones for the devils. This demonstrates that this universe is managed according to a perfect system.
67:3 who created seven heavens one upon another. You see not in the creation of the All-Merciful any inconsistency. Then look again, do you see any fissure?
67:5 And verily We have adorned the lower heaven with lamps and made therefrom shooting stones for the devils. And We have prepared for them the torment of the Blaze.
Surah Al-Mulk refers to an aspect of Allah’s perfect ability by mentioning that He has prepared Hell for punishing the disbelievers and giving good news to the believers that He will forgive their sins and give them a great reward. This agrees with the typical style of the Quran that mentions warning of Allah’s severe punishment and then refers to His immense forgiveness and reward for the believers.
67:6 And for those who disbelieve in their Lord is the torment of Hell, the wretched end.
67:12 Surely those who fear their Lord, though unseen, for them is forgiveness and a great reward.
Surah Al-Mulk refers to an aspect of Allah’s perfect knowledge, ability, and blessings on His creatures. Allah knows what people conceal and proclaim. He has created man and made the earth subservient for him so that he can live easily on it. Allah has also made the earth a safe place for man and protected it from sinking and from burning stones. Moreover, Allah has made birds able to fly easily in the air and provided people with provision.
67:13 And conceal your speech or proclaim it, He is the All-Knowing of what is in the breasts.
67:15 He is the One Who has made the earth subservient for you - so walk through its tracts and eat of His provision, and to Him is the Resurrection.
67:19 Have they not seen the birds above them spreading their wings, and folding them? None holds them but the All-Merciful. Verily, He is All-Seeing of everything.
67:21 Yet, who is this that can provide for you if He withholds His provision? No, but they persist in insolence and aversion.
Finally, surah Al-Mulk confirms that the resurrection on the Day of Judgment will take place, and Allah only knows when it will happen. It warns the disbelievers of Allah’s severe punishment. Furthermore, surah Al-Mulk mentions that the believers must put trust in Allah and that Allah is able to make water sink into the earth so that no one can provide people with it except He, Exalted be He.
67:25 And they say, ‘When shall this promise come to pass if you are truthful?’
67:26 Say, ‘The knowledge thereof is only with Allah and I am only a clear warner.’
67:29 Say, ‘He is the All-Merciful, and in Him, we put our trust. So, you will know who is in error, manifest.’
67:30 Say, ‘Tell me, if your water were to sink away, who then can bring you water, flowing.’
In sum, surah Al-Mulk confirms that Allah exists and is One by referring to some examples of His creatures, His perfect knowledge and ability, warning to some horrors of the Day of Judgment, and some of His blessings on people.
