The Noble Quran English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Ma’rij Ayah 36-44
70:36 So, what is the matter with those who disbelieve, rushing with outstretched necks toward you,
70:37 on the right and on the left, in groups?
70:38 Does every man of them hope to be admitted to a Garden of Bliss?
70:39 No! Verily, We have created them of what they know.
70:40 Nay! I swear by the Lord of the Easts and the Wests, surely We are able
70:41 to replace them with others better than them. And We are not to be outrun.
70:42 Hence, leave them while indulging in vain talk and playing until they meet their day, which they are promised.
70:43 The day they shall come forth from the graves hastily as if they were hurrying to a waymark.
70:44 Their eyes will be humbled, covered with humility. That is the day that they were promised.
Relationship with the Previous Part
The righteous believers are promised to enter Paradise in the previous part. Then, this part mentions some of the conditions of the wicked disbelievers in the life of this world and the Hereafter. They hastily reject believing in the Oneness of Allah and insist on following the path of misguidance. Therefore, Allah warns them of severe punishment, and He, Exalted be He, commanded Messenger Muhammad [peace be upon him] to turn away from them as long as he conveyed to them the message of Islam properly. They will hastily come out of their graves on the Day of Judgment with humble and humiliated eyes because of the horrors of that day.
Tafsir
70:36 So, what is the matter with those who disbelieve, rushing with outstretched necks toward you,
70:37 on the right and on the left, in groups?
The ayah eloquently portrays the attitude of the disbelievers toward Messenger Muhammad, who invited them to believe in the Oneness of Allah and avoid worshipping false gods with Him.
The interrogation in the ayah is for astonishment at the conduct and reaction of the disbelievers, which indicate their ignorance and stubbornness.
O noble Messenger Muhammad, what is the matter with those disbelievers? Why do they rush toward you while they outstretch their necks? They come toward you and assemble in groups to the right and the left. Nonetheless, they insist on disbelieving in the Oneness of Allah and following the path of misguidance. Indeed, their attitude is strange. They know the truth, but they turn away from it out of arrogance and stubbornness.
70:38 Does every man of them hope to be admitted to a Garden of Bliss?
Does every man of those stubborn disbelievers hope to be admitted to Paradise? Does every man of those disbelievers hope to enter Paradise though they insist on disobeying the commands of Allah? No, indeed, their abode will be Hell.
The interrogation in the ayah is for criticism and condemnation to show that the disbelievers have reached a great degree of ignorance and conceit that they hope to enter Paradise though they follow the path of misguidance and disobey the commands of Allah.
It was reported that the disbelievers used to gather around Messenger Muhammad [peace be upon him] and say, ‘If those, namely, the believers, will enter Paradise, as Muhammad says, then, we shall enter it before them.’ Thus, it was revealed, ‘70:38 Does every man of them hope to be admitted to a Garden of Bliss?
70:39 No! Verily, We have created them of what they know.
No! The disbelievers will never attain their hope. Undoubtedly, they know from what Allah has created them. Verily, Allah created them from despicable water. Whoever is created from such a mean thing should not be conceited or insolent. Deserving to enter Paradise is attained by obeying the commands of Allah and not by merely being a created being. Thus, how do the disbelievers hope to be admitted to Paradise though they are disobedient to the commands of Allah?
70:40 Nay! I swear by the Lord of the Easts and the Wests, surely We are able
70:41 to replace them with others better than them. And We are not to be outrun.
Allah, Exalted be He, mentions what confirms His perfect ability and warns the disbelievers of replacing them with other people, who are better than them.
Allah, the Lord of the Easts and the Wests, swears that He can destroy the disbelievers and replace them with other creatures that are better than them as they will be obedient to Him. And no one of the disbelievers can escape from His punishment. Indeed, Allah is Able and nothing can stand before His perfect ability.
Allah, Exalted be He, can swear by whatever thing of His creatures, but the created being can only swear by Allah.
The Easts and the Wests refer to the rising setting points of the sun, the moon, and other planets throughout the year.
70:42 Hence, leave them while indulging in vain talk and playing until they meet their day, which they are promised.
O noble Messenger Muhammad, leave the disbelievers, who rush toward you while outstretching their neck, while indulging in vain talk and falsehood, and playing in the life of this world until they face the painful punishment of Hell on the Day of Judgment, which they are promised that it will certainly take place. Leave them while they are ridiculing the truth that is revealed to you from your Lord, and do not worry about their attitude. Surely, they will suffer the evil consequence of their disbelief and indulgence in falsehood.
70:43 The day they shall come forth from the graves hastily as if they were hurrying to a waymark.
70:44 Their eyes will be humbled, covered with humility. That is the day that they were promised.
O noble Messenger Muhammad, leave the disbelievers while indulging in vain talk and playing until the Day of Judgment comes. On that day, they shall come forth from their graves hastily to respond to the caller for gathering as if they were hurrying to a waymark.
The waymark refers to the idols that they used to worship and invoke besides Allah.
When the disbelievers come forth from their graves to respond to the caller for gathering on the Day of Judgment, their eyes will be humbled and covered with humility. They shall be extremely frightened because of the horrors of the Day of Judgment, as they did not do righteous deeds to save them from the severe punishment of Allah. They worshipped other gods besides Allah and disobeyed His commands. Thus, they shall face the Day of Judgment, which they were promised that it would take place and they shall be losers on that day.
In the life of this world, the disbelievers deny the occurrence of the Day of Judgment. It will certainly take place and they shall know their evil end on that day.
Surah Al-Ma’rij begins by confirming the occurrence of the Day of Judgment. It is also concluded with confirming its occurrence.
