Introduction to English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Muddathir

Quran Surah Al-Mudathir

Name of the Surah Al-Muddathir

This surah is called Al-Muddathir, a person who covers himself with his clothes, because it begins with referring to this description. Allah, Exalted be He, addresses His Prophet and Messenger Muhammad [peace be upon him] and says to him, 74:1 O you enveloped in your cloak, namely, O you al-Muddathir in your cloak.

Surah Al-Muddathir was revealed in Makkah. It contains fifty-six ayah.

Relationship between Surah Al-Muzamil and Surah Al-Muddathir

According to the written copy of the Quran, Al-Mushaf, surah Al-Muddathir comes after surah Al-Muzamil. Both surahs begin with addressing Messenger Muhammad. Surah Al-Muzamil begins by commanding Messenger Muhammad to pray the night prayer to prepare himself to perform the task of inviting people to Islam. On the other hand, surah Al-Muddathir begins by commanding Messenger Muhammad to warn people of the punishment of Allah if they insist on disbelieving in His Oneness.

Most Important Topics Discussed in Surah Al-Muddathir

Surah Al-Muddathir contains some instructions to Messenger Muhammad at the beginning of his duty of conveying Islam to the people. It also contains warnings to the disbelievers and some attributes of Hell.

74:1 O you enveloped in your cloak,

74:2 Arise and warn!

74:7 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient.

Then, surah Al-Muddathir mentions that the Day of Judgment will be difficult.

74:8 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded,

74:9 Surely, that day will be a difficult day.

74:10 For the disbelievers, not easy.

Then, the surah strongly warns one of the disbelievers, namely, Al-Walid Ibn Al-Mughirah, who vehemently opposed Islam after acknowledging that Allah revealed the Quran. He claimed that the Quran is magic; thus, he deserved to enter Hell and suffer its severe punishment.

74:11 Leave Me with him whom I created alone,

74:12 and gave him ample wealth,

74:13 and sons by his side,

74:24 Then, he said, ‘This is nothing but magic from old times.

74:25 This is nothing but the word of a mortal.’

74:26 I shall burn him in Saqar!

Then, surah Al-Muddathir mentions some of the attributes of Hell, the number of its keepers, and that it will appear before the disbelievers on the Day of Judgment.

74:27 And what will make you know what Saqar is?

74:28 It spares not nor does it leave.

74:29 It scorches the skin.

74:30 Over it are nineteen.

Then, the surah emphasizes the gravity of Hell by swearing by the moon, the night, and the dawn.

74:32 No! By the moon,

74:33 and the night when it retreats,

74:34 and the dawn when it brightens.

74:35 Indeed, it is one of the greatest things,

Then, surah Al-Muddathir mentions that every person is responsible for his deeds and no one will be called to account for the deeds of others.

74:38 Every soul is pledged for what it has earned,

Finally, surah Al-Muddathir is concluded with referring to the reason that makes the disbelievers turn away from following the right path and refuse to believe in the Oneness of Allah.

74:49 Then, what is the matter with them that they turn away from the Reminder,

74:50 as if they were startled asses

74:51 that fled from a lion?

74:52 Rather, every person of them wants to be given pages, spread.
