The Quran is a Reminder to the Worlds

the Noble Quran is a sufficient reminder to people

The Noble Quran English Translation and Tafsir of Surah Al-Qalam Ayah 44-52

68:44 Hence, leave Me with him, who disbelieves in this discourse. We shall gradually draw them from where they perceive not.

68:45 And I shall grant them respite. Verily, My plan is firm.

68:46 Or do you ask them for a wage, so they are burdened with debt?

68:47 Or have they knowledge of the unseen, so they write therefrom?

68:48 Hence, be patient with the decree of your Lord and be not as the companion of the whale when he called while he was in distress.

68:49 Had not a Grace from His Lord reached him, he would have been cast off in the wilderness while he was blamed.

68:50 Then his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.

68:51 And those who disbelieve would almost strike you down with their eyes when they hear the Reminder, and they say, ‘Surely, he is a madman.

68:52 And it is nothing but a Reminder to the worlds.

Relationship with the Previous Part

The disbelievers are warned of the horrors of the Day of Judgment in the previous part. Then, Allah warns them of His punishment, which is a sufficient warning for whoever disbelieves in the Quran. In addition, Allah commands Messenger Muhammad [peace be upon him] to be patient and warn him of boredom concerning conveying the message of Islam to people, as Prophet Jonah did. He also informs Messenger Muhammad that his people envy him and hope that affliction befalls him.

Tafsir

68:44 Hence, leave Me with him, who disbelieves in this discourse. We shall gradually draw them from where they perceive not.

Allah, Exalted be He, consoles Messenger Muhammad for the abuse he suffers at the hands of the disbelievers.

O noble Messenger Muhammad, ‘Leave the affair of the disbelievers, who disbelieve in the Quran to Me. Do not occupy yourself with their conditions and reactions. We shall gradually draw them and plot against them from where they do not perceive. We shall leave them enjoying the life of this world until they think that they can escape Our punishment, so they will persist in their transgression and wrongdoing. Then, Our severe punishment will befall them suddenly from where they do not perceive.’

68:45 And I shall grant them respite. Verily, My plan is firm.

Allah will grant the disbelievers respite and prolong their life span though they insist on disbelieving in His Oneness and sinning to demonstrate proof against them proving that they are given sufficient chances. Indeed, Allah’s plan against them is firm and His severe punishment will certainly befall them.

Abu Musa, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that Messenger Muhammad [peace be upon him] said, ‘Allah gives respite to the oppressor, but when He will seize him, He does not let him escape.’

Indeed, the affair of all those who are on this earth is very small before the perfect ability of Allah, Who wisely and perfectly manages this universe. However, Allah warns them to save themselves from His severe punishment before it is too late. Allah leaves the wrongdoers and oppressors to go to extremes in their transgression. Then, He will suddenly punish them severely and they can never escape from His punishment. Indeed, Allah is just and He gives sufficient chances to the oppressors and wrongdoers to repent of their sins and amend their way, but if they insist on following the path of misguidance, Allah’s severe punishment will befall them from where they do not perceive.

68:46 Or do you ask them for a wage, so they are burdened with debt?

68:47 Or have they knowledge of the unseen, so they write therefrom?

The interrogation is for criticism and condemnation to refute the groundless claims and excuses of the disbelievers.

O noble Messenger Muhammad, ‘Do you ask the disbelievers a wage for conveying the Islamic message and inviting them to follow the right path, so they are burdened with debt that they cannot repay? Thus, they reject following the right path. Or have the disbelievers knowledge of the unseen and know what Allah has written in the preserved tablet, so they have knowledge that no one has and they write therefrom, so they are able to dispute the truthfulness of the message that you have brought them?

The truth is that Messenger Muhammad has never asked the disbelievers for a wage for conveying the message of Islam to people, and the disbelievers and the disbelievers do not have knowledge of the unseen. Rather, all their claims and excuses are lies and the outcome of their ignorance.

68:48 Hence, be patient with the decree of your Lord and be not as the companion of the whale when he called while he was in distress.

After refuting the claims of the disbelievers, Messenger Muhammad is commanded to adhere to patience until Allah decides the matter between him and the disbelievers.

O noble Messenger Muhammad, ‘Be patient with your Lord's decree. Keep on conveying the message of Islam patiently. Do not let anything turn you away from conveying the Islamic message to people. Indeed triumph will be yours and your followers share at the end. Do not be like the companion of the whale. Do not be like Prophet Jonah as he was bored with his people when they refused to follow the right path. Thus, he angrily left them. Then, the whale swallowed him and he sincerely called his Lord while he was in distress to save him from the affliction that befell him.’

68:49 Had not a Grace from His Lord reached him, he would have been cast off in the wilderness while he was blamed.

Had not a Grace from His Lord reached Prophet Jonah by accepting his repentance and his invocation, he would have been cast off in the wilderness while he was blamed for leaving his people without taking permission from Allah, his Lord.

The ayah mentions how Allah’s bounty and mercy embraced Prophet Jonah, who was bored when his people refused to follow the right path, to which he invited them. Thus, he got angry and left them, after which a whale swallowed him. He reminded in the darkness of the whale's belly in distress. Then, Allah’s bounty and mercy embraced him, and He was saved from the affliction. Had not Allah’s bounty reached him, he would have been cast off in the wilderness while he was blamed for leaving his people without taking permission from Allah, his Lord.

68:50 Then his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.

Allah’s bounty and mercy reached Prophet Jonah, and Allah chose him to be His Prophet and Messenger to call people to worship Him alone. Allah also accepted his repentance and made him one of the righteous, with whom Allah is pleased.

68:51 And those who disbelieve would almost strike you down with their eyes when they hear the Reminder, and they say, ‘Surely, he is a madman.

Surah Al-Qalam is concluded with referring to the fact that the disbelievers extremely hate and envy Messenger Muhammad.

O noble Messenger Muhammad, the disbelievers would almost strike you down with their eyes and cause you to fall because of the great hatred they had against you when they hear the recitation of the Quran that reminds them of things that they need to succeed in the life of this world and the Hereafter. They would say that you are a madman out of envy and hatred.

68:52 And it is nothing but a Reminder to the worlds.

Indeed, the Quran, which Allah revealed to His Prophet and Messenger Muhammad, is nothing but a Reminder to the worlds. It guides man to what brings him happiness in the life of this world and the Hereafter. Those who follow its teachings will be successful in this life of this world and the Hereafter.

Learned Lessons from Surah Al-Qalam Ayah 44-52

Allah is a sufficient Recompenser, Who takes revenge on those who disbelieve in His Oneness and the Quran, which He revealed to His Prophet and Messenger Muhammad [peace be upon him].

Allah leaves the oppressors and wrongdoers persisting in their wrongdoings and gives them chances to amend their way and repent of their sins, but if they insist on following the path of misguidance, His severe punishment will befall them from where they do not perceive.

The disbelievers have false claims. They do not know the unseen. Only Allah knows the unseen. They only want to support their unfounded claims to prove that they follow the right path, which is a sheer lie.

A believer should be patient with Allah’s decrees and he should not be bored when hardship befalls him.

Allah’s mercy and bounty are vast and they embrace His righteous slaves as long as they obey His commands and seek His forgiveness.

The disbelievers extremely hate and envy Messenger Muhammad to the extent that they wish that harm befalls him from anywhere, but Allah will protect him from their evil eyes and wishes.

The Quran, which Allah revealed to Messenger Muhammad, is a reminder to the worlds and it contains all that man needs to succeed in the life of this world and the Hereafter.
